Knife nuts........check this shit out!

Recommended Posts

Not every day someone just bends over backwards to do something good. About a year ago I bought two knives. Columbia River knife and tool M16-14T and a M16-13SF. Both are absolutely wonderful folders that I carry and use every day in Iraq. My only complaint.........as several other people I know have. They used freakin torx fasteners to put the damn knife together. Any idea how hard it is to find a tiny torx driver in the middle of Iraq? Yep........you guessed it. Freakin impossible. So.......I wrote them and complained. They haven't promised to change the fasteners they use but they DID offer to send me.........free of charge.........the two torx tools and free replacement parts! That's just damn cool. B| So..........not only does CRKT make a hell of a good knife.......they take care of their customers too! Here's a copy of the emails.

Dear Sir,

First of all I wanted to thank you for building a quality product. I am a contractor in Iraq and have been carrying an M16-13SF and an M16-14T for about a year now. Absolutely the best folding knives I have ever owned. Just one question. Who's idea was it to use these torx head machine screws in the construction? I know this may be hard to imagine but finding a torx driver in the middle of Northern Iraq is right next to impossible. Everyone loves your knives but most owners I know have lost the pocket clips due to lack of a suitable way to tighten the fasteners. I have a tenuous hold on my M16-14T with 1 of the 3 originals left. Any chance I can find replacement fasteners that have a more common drive system?

Their response:

Thank you for the nice comments. I am not sure whose idea it was on the torx, but I have a way to fix the problem. What we suggest you’ll want a #6 & #8 Torx wrench. Those are the two sizes we use on most of our knives. These smaller sizes are found at most electronic stores (except Radio Shack) and also Snap-on Dealers carry them. Other options are the Husky HD-74502 U driver available at Home Depot and Wal-Mart’s “Precision Toolkit” that has both the #6 & #8 Torx in addition to other wrenches for under $2.00.

Also it is always recommended that you use LocTite or a thread lock product as general maintenance to keep the screws secure.

Due to your location I will send you a couple of torx (no charge) and if you give me your address I will send you the replacement parts for you and your buddies. I will need all models numbers.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Henderson

Customer Service Supervisor

Thank you CRKT! :)

CRKT, did myself and quite a few others right when we were in Afghanistan as well. Damn good knives but thats what one would expect from Blackie Collins designs anyways.

Most reputable companies love to hear about these types of issues because it gives them an opportunity to make improvements. Good on them for sending the parts and tools free of charge.

I have a friend who writes emails to companies for just about every product he buys and gives them feedback.(yes, he has no life) He tells them if he liked it, loved it or hated it. He always gets a reply and frequently gets some coupons for free stuff or discounts on their products. I have been surprised on some of the nice stuff he has received.

Ain't that the truth. My father and I own Eastpack Backpacks. Just simple little school bag type. Well he's has his since I was a tot, and a few years ago on of the seams failed as well as the zipper was wearing out. Since they have a lifetime guarantee he sent it in to them, but afraid they would probably just replace it and as his had sentimental value since he hauled our things in it for years while we were growing up, he asked if it could be repaired. I must have cost them 3 times as much to repair it, than it would have to replace it, but that's what they did.......:)

That has a really nice ending, although, when you said "My father and I own Eastpack Backpacks" I thought you meant the actually company for a second:D

Warning: Rant -

I have had not so good experiance with customer service - the zip on my Oakley board jacket broke (some teeth fell off - no idea how it happened) after I had used it on two separate week long ski trips. It was about 2 weeks out of the 6 month period and I had nothing but crap from the retailer and Oakley. After 4 months of them having my jacket I finally got it back, with the zip still broken, the zipper missing and biro stains on the cream part>:(>:(>:( Needles to say, not impressed.

They finaly sent me the zipper back but all they could say was they don't repair things and as it was outside 6 months then I couldn't have a replacement. I could have had a pair of sunglasses if I had let them keep the jacket (umm, a £100 pair of sunglasses for a £200 jacket, I think not). Crap retailers (a small family owned buisness who I gave a lot of custom to, so you would think they would tey and be helpful rateher than repeatedly lie to me>:()

end rant:)
