BrokenR1 0 #28 May 19, 2006 I almost always do it, both in my big truck and my tiny car. I'm quite good at it and can probably do it better and more accurately than pulling in forward since I back in so much more often. Reasons off the top of my head in order... 1. I'm always in more of a hurry to leave then to get somewhere. 2. It's easier to see while pulling out. 3. With the truck it allows me to stick the rear end over the curb so I stick out in the street less than had I pulled in forward. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Rap is to music what etch-a-sketch is to art. PLFXpert 0 #29 May 19, 2006 I do it all the time now. Mostly b/c there'll be a turn or something for me to pull up and make it really easy to back in--much easier than trying to turn straight in with my big-ass Sequoia. It also makes it far easier to get out since when I'm backing out of a spot (vs. pulling straight out) I have think-I'm-about-to-hit-something-but-really-I'm-still-4-feet-away-from-it syndrome. sharimcm 0 #30 May 19, 2006 I am very good and backing my little car into tight spaces, so I am guilty. Since a previous car was hit twice by speeders through the parking lot (their fault), I stopped backing up out of the spot, and starting backing in to it. And when some dumbass in a huge ass truck or SUV parks in a "COMPACT" space... That pisses me off!! I can barely fit my big girl (that's what I call my car) into the regular spots. Why can't ALL spots be slanted??? The ones that are straight drive me nuts. Those are the ones I back into nearly ALWAYS.Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
Icon134 0 #32 May 19, 2006 I think its generally safer to back into a spot then backing out of a spot. When I'm backing into it I KNOW what is behind me what cars are going to be there, etc... now on the other hand if I'm backing out of the spot not only do I not have as much visibility but I also am not garunteed that there won't be someone driving too fast through the parking lot.Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... shropshire 0 #33 May 19, 2006 I dont understand, What's the big deal? You've either got to back in or back out and backing out into a busy street is more risky than leaving forward..... ANd if it pisses someone off because they have to wait, well then so much the better. . (.)Y(.) livendive 8 #34 May 19, 2006 Quote Come on. Inherently you have better vision in front of you. It's certainly easier to see what you're doing going into the space. I totally disagree. I have mirrors that show me the sides of my truck aft of the front of the doors, as well as anything on the ground. I don't have mirrors that give me that angle forward of the front of the doors. Also, precision seems easier to come by when backing up...why do you think forklifts are steered with the back wheels instead of the front? I usually park head-in, but I'll back in if it's really tight, just because I can see better. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" sickandtwisted 0 #35 May 19, 2006 Backing into a parking spot seems to be safer to me. It is easier than backing out of a parking spot. I usually try to pull all the way through the space. JohnRich 4 #37 May 19, 2006 QuoteI back into parking spots for one simple reason. I can see better when leaving the parking spot. Bingo! Companies that have fleets of drivers, with professional driver training programs, teach their drivers to back-in. The reason is because it is more safe. The space into which you are backing is not likely to have pedestrain or vehicle traffic zooming through it, because it's bracketed by other vehicles, and you were able to examine the area as you pulled up. But if you back-up coming out of a parking space, you have both to worry about. When you combine that pedestrian/vehicle traffic with limited visibility, you have danger. It's a good practice to back-in. I try to back-in whenever I can. However, I'm also mindful of traffic behind me, and if someone is going to be inconvenienced because of me, I'll go ahead and pull in forward to let them by. TMPattersonJr 0 #38 May 19, 2006 I back into parking spots all the time (re-reading to make sure the proper context is there) but I make sure to turn on my signal if I've got someone behind me. that way they know what I'm doing, if they keep moving closer, it's their broken headlamp not mine!!!Blue SkiesBlack DeathFacebook www.PLabsInc.com www.SkydiveDeLand.com www.FlyteSkool.ws
NWFlyer 2 #39 May 19, 2006 Quotebut I'll back in if it's really tight Yup... I used to live in an apartment building with a tiny garage. My assigned spot was located such that the only really efficient/effective way to get in was to back in. Made pulling out and exiting the garage much easier, too. There's a lot of street parking spots here in Seattle that are marked "back in angle parking only," which seems to confuse people who are new to town. In that case (pulling out into oncoming traffic) it makes much more sense in terms of both puling in and pulling out of the spot - visibility is going to be better in both situations."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
flyinghonu 0 #40 May 19, 2006 I like backing into spaces too but if I see someone behind me, I won't do it. I think it's rude to make them wait and wouldn't want someone to do that to me. Reason I do it is b/c of where I live. People around these parts see a car backing up and they don't stop, the fuckers speed up (which has resulted in a lot of near misses when I can finally see the car and the fucker speeding past me when I'm already 3/4 out of the damn spot) Great! Now I have a wicked case of road rage and I'm not even driving! As far as taking more than one try to back it in - if you need more than one try then you probably shouldn't be backing your car in....let alone driving. boinky 0 #41 May 20, 2006 Just thought I'd give you an update.....I backed into a parking space at Sam's this afternoon. I thought of you and your feelings on the matter while I was doing it. I made sure I backed up quickly, cleanly and straight, so I didn't have to do the in/out, in/out thing. Me do good? Nina Are we called "DAWGs" because we stick our noses up people's butts? Conundrum 1 #42 May 20, 2006 I back into parking spots probably half the time. Why? I can see better when I leave and backing out of a parking space can be a pain in the ass if some nimrod is an idiot next to you. It takes me just a few seconds longer to pull in backward than it does pulling in forward.
Conundrum 1 #43 May 20, 2006 QuoteQuoteOf course, if you're a woman, statistically, for biological reasons you will likely have trouble with backing up, so you may see things differently. Seriously. Sorry I have to call bullshit. That is the biggest bunch of stereotypical crap. Women have issues with it because they over the generations have been told over and over that men were superior and women just cant do things as well. I can take and either back in park or for that matter parrellel park anything you put me behind the wheel of (with the exception of a semi, as I havent tried that with a trailer, but I think after a couple trys I could do it). I used to parrellel park my GMC Yukon down in the city of chicago with no problems one try with about a foot in front and a foot in back...and that was a good sized spot. Can do the same with my aunts full size pick up truck, with out blinking. So do not give me this line of shit that women because they are women cannot back up. It is because they choose to let that stereotype be the guide they follow. [/rant] Generally speaking, women are not the best drivers. Are there some great drivers that are women? Of course! But most are oblivious to their suuroundings and probably wouldn't have a clue about actually controlling a car. I don't believe it's becasue they are "following" a stereotrype, it's simply the way it is. And that's not saying that there aren't retarded drivers who are men.
