Pole climbing

Just got certified for climbing telephone poles today for BSouth....Man what a week....Do not not want to repeat this anytime soon.....anybody else ever have a pole climbing experience?

I was stationed in Korea last year, part of my job was troubleshooting/repairing RF equipment aloft. I'm not sure if it was scarier being atop a 120' triangular tower atop a mountain to swap out an antenna or 30' up a power-pole replacing a 23000-volt fuse. I was one of the few certified climbers in my unit so I did both. A few times up the tower, I wondered what it'd be like to just hop off with a BASE-parachute rather than climb down .

I feel your pain man, I really do .

I used to be deathly afraid of heights. Pole climbing was the first step in addressing that fear, skydiving was really the only way for me to top it. I now have a healthy respect for heights, rather than a fear. Still I'd much rather be at 14k than 200ft.

My dad ran a small cable TV company. He had to climb poles all the time. He would not let me get anywhere near his gaffs. But he would let me climb the tower anytime I wanted. For Christmas, we pulled lights up the guy wires to decorate the thing. You could see it from miles away. I think climbing it firmly set my love of heights even deeper.

I was a 31C back here at Ft. Lewis. Used to talk at you poor slobs in Korea all the time on the rad-i-o.

I saved some cable dogs' ASSES from getting FRIED over here once when some communication failure almost made it a reeeeeally bad day.

Jaye is staring at the cable dogs. Cable dogs are climbing #3. Cable dogs said they would be climbing #2.

They came back in later...I told them what happened. They just kind of stared at me. --> I don't know if they fully understood what the hell almost happened, or if it just happens so much that it didn't bother them. Honestly I don't recall if it was our guys screw up (new guys to the station and weren't really 'on the ball' if you get my meaning ), or if the cable dogs really did give us the wrong antenna, which was TOTALLY possible -it isn't like they are marked. But it was almost a really shitty day for all of us.

I climbed one of the big tent poles in the party tent at Quincey WFFC in 2000.
Chock that up to stupid drunk encouragement from the band.

The Hungarians I worked with in Bosnia had a neat set of climbing gear. It had a flat footplate, like a set of drywaller's stilts. Instead of a gaff spike, it had a semicircular rod that hooked around the tree/pole with a couple of blunter gaff spikes in the tip of the rod. (Crook your finger like a trigger, that's what it looked like)

The rod attached to the footplate with a blocked hinge, so they could flip it up (mostly) out of the way for walking to the pole. Pretty cool idea, I thought - no worries about gaffing out!
