Gees people, how do you drive like that.

Recommended Posts

I work at a dealership service department. At least once or twice a day I will go to pull up a car since no driver is available. I will get in the car and it will either be already adjusted with the seat crushing my knees into the dash, steering wheel at my chest and pointed towards my face, seat leaned forward, etc... or it will adjust that way automatically (certain newer Cadillacs) after closing the door.

Clearly these people think they will never get in an accident or one bad enough for this to be a problem.

I've watched technicians deploy airbags for recalls. Let it be known, airbags are there to stop your body, not just your head.

Knees get crushed into lower dash panels... steering wheels crush ribs...

A good rule of thumb I use and think everyone should use is that your chest should be just far enough away from the steering wheel to warrant a slight comfortable bend of the elbows where you don't feel like you're pulling on the wheel.

If you have a telescopic steering wheel, you should adjust your seat to where your legs are extened comfortably then adjust the steering wheel accordingly.

Just sayin.

If you did some research on these cars you'd probably find they're owned by little old men or little old ladies and rarely exceed 35 mph... We have enough of them here in Florida to be able to recognize the description...:D

I have a cheap Toyota Matrix XR without an adjustable steering wheel and I'm only 5'4" so I have to have the seat almost leaning forward a little just to be able to hold the wheel with my arms out straight.

I thought the rule was that you should be able to sit back in the seat all the way and have your wrist touch the center of the top of the steering wheel comfortably. For me that's leaning pretty far forward.

I thought you were supposed to slide the seat back as far as you can and recline it so you can just see over the dash.Thats how the brathas do it around here.

.

That's what I used to do in my sexy 99 Mustang. I miss that car. :(

That's pretty much right. I just never heard it expressed. But it's also important to make sure the steering wheel isn't aimed at your face because that puts it further away from you and makes it less effective in assisting your seatbelt AND more harmful.

You should be giving yourself plenty of "breathing room" between the lower/upper parts of your body and the car.

Some people drive their cars like they've already been in an accident with no room to move.

I can't adjust my steering wheel! Stupid thing.

That is one of the things I will definitely look for next time I buy a car. I got spoiled before and I just figured all steering wheels were adjustable til I actually tried it while driving off the lot. >:(

(yeah I know, I'm a dumbass)

I am 5'2" and sit fairly close... my knees don't touch. I've had an air bag go off and yes it did hurt..... my legs are just short....

I do love my hubby's Magnum and its adjustable pedals.....I feel like I am sitting in the back seat! :)

I am 5'3 and drive with me seat back. I can reach the pedals just fine with my toes. I don't know why people think they have to have their whole foot on the pedals. When I was 16 I saw a friend of mine get crushed by the steering wheel/dash of her car and in my mind the farther away from the steering wheel the safer I am.

Since you're interested:

Sometimes people laugh when they get in my car b/c they remark "It's like a fat man was driving". I like my seat far enough back so my arm can extend straight out to the wheel (b/c often I drive "homie" style with one hand on top of the wheel and the other at my side, free to pick up my latte, adjust the radio and/or the A/C or shift if I'm driving a standard).

I like my steering wheel as low as it goes b/c I don't like it blocking my view of the dashboard---I have no idea why. Thus, my seat is usually low, as well, but still not too far below the bottom of the wheel, in case my hand up top gets tired I can relax that one and drive with my other hand in my lap holding just the very bottom of the wheel---makes for casual/relaxing driving--at least until another uppity song comes on in which "homie-style" will inevitably return.

And last, but not least, I like FULL lumbar support. I need to feel the seat pressing up into my lower back supporting me like a fantastic luva:P

And that's how I drive....:)

I too drive Homie style but not the typical homie style, I sometimes use just the palm of my hand on the top of my wheel and my fingers touching the dash. I too will do the hand in the lap driving technique, I find it quite relaxing and effective in high way travel. How ever I like my seat closer to the dash in my SUV than I did in my HONDA, partly due to thefact that my Honda seat was stuck all the way back. When shorter people wanted to drive my car I had to get a CD case and pillow out of the trunk so they could do so... Any who I like my knee to rest against the side of the console, I feel like it gives me more support. Probably not the best or safest driving position, but hey I jump out of planes, what do you want.

Three cheers for homie-style!;)

I also sing along while driving. I've been caught once or twice:$ Once was during a rap song that was on the radio: Biggie. Biggie. Biggie. Can't you see? Sometimes your words just hypnotize me. And the car next to me found the song and we busted out together. It was hilarious---probably funnier if you were there, though, huh?:P

I have my steering wheel almost as far down as it can go as any other way it tends to get in the way of the dash view. Then I have my seat up where it should be, for me to reach the pedals and be able to hold the clutch in. I'm not the tallest boy so when I go to the shop I don't think many can get in. Only once in awhile do I see everything the way I left it. I try to move the steering wheel but forget most times.

And GFD I think you are right with the arm extension thing. I couldn't remember though if it was to your wrist or that your hands should be able to touch the dash. Either way it's about the same, unless you have one of those telescoping bastards.

p.s. my knees have been slammed into a lower dash and i'm lucky my seatbelt kept them from going any farther.

ummmm, because I'm short! :P

I have enough distance for the airbag, and can barely reach the peddles.

Anyone who is taller than me will get their knees crunched when getting into my car.

I don't really, think there are any 'rules' regarding that... look around!:D Actually, you should look at the steering wheel like a 'clock' and position your hands at 10 & 2.

I hate that lumbar support. It bothers me. I guess, because, I have a very straight back. Also, I don't drive with my wallet in my back pocket. After awhile, it aggrivates my sciatic nerve. I learned that, driving trucks. I also, keep the seat as far back as it will go, and the back of the seat is straight up... and that's how I drive!
