jumpergirl 0 #1 May 1, 2006 40 Years of SCR’s to be Celebrated during SkyFest 2006 The Bob Buquor Memorial Star Crest skydiving awards were initiated in early 1967 by Bill Newell as a tribute to a friend and mentor, the late Robert H. Buquor. Buquor was one of the best early freefall photographers, and he pioneered structured relative work known as “star formations”. It was these early freefall formations that led the way to “mega” formations, sequential RW and most of the other forms of relative work being practiced today. The Star Crest awards were formed to recognize relative work skydivers for in-air achievements and to honor the memory of Bob Buquor. Newell’s original purpose for forming the Star Crest awards was to record and preserve, for parachuting history, the accomplishments of Buquor, and the twenty or so skydivers who had participated in the first 8-way stars. As time passed, and more skydivers became capable of forming 8-way and larger formations, Newell saw no reason not to include them on the “special roster.” Thus, the perpetual Star Crest awards program was born. Beginning with the first 8-man star in 1965, to date, more than 25,000 various Star Crest awards have been issued. On July 27, 1966, Bob Buquor drowned in the ocean off Malibu Beach while filming a stunt sequence for a Hollywood movie. The MGM production, starring Tony Curtis and Sharon Tate, ironically was titled "Don't Make Waves." Bill Newell recalls why he established the Star Crest Program: "Bob was an excellent cameraman, but he had a tough time with some of the parachuting establishment because, I suppose, he was ahead of his time in areas that made them envious. When he died, I didn't think he'd been properly recognized for the good work he'd done up to that time. I decided to create a perpetual memorial in his honor to keep the brotherhood spirit alive by recording relative workers' accomplishments for the history of the sport.” This July will mark the 40th anniversary of Buquor’s death. Bill Newell will be at SkyFest at Skydive Spaceland (July 12-17) to celebrate Buquor’s memory and the formation of the SCR award. It is possible that Curly Roe will be in attendance as well, as he is the originator of the beloved SCR ceremony, Texas style. Please visit www.SkyFestBoogie.com for more information about SkyFest and www.scr-awards.com for more information about Bob Buquor, Bill Newell, Curly Roe the SCR awards and ceremony. ACMESkydiver 0 #10 May 1, 2006 Hey, speaking of SCR's, I have an older jumpsuit I bought off of E-bay because it looks really cool and I'm going to keep it in our 'sports' room we're having built in the new house. It has some really cool old patches, one of them is an SCR. That patch is black and white and orange. Maybe I'll see if I can scan it and post a pic.~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.

I didn't see any info on whether or not these awards are still being issued. On the site, there is an application so I guess they are still being issued. Some of the talk in the thread suggests those awards are as well. They are still going, they are updating the list of reciepients, last I checked they had made it to the 80's. we focus on SCR's for the first three days of the SkyFest boogie. Then we do the largest SCR ceremony on Sat. nite. Should be a good one this year. Many folks from last year get to pour this year!!!
 wmw999 2,447 #22 May 1, 2006 Anybody can apply for an SCR. You just get the form (off the web these days), fulfill the requirements, and then have it filled out and sent in. The ceremony is a Texas thing these days. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. But the program is still going strong. In fact, there's a WSCR program, not run by the same person. The runner of that one (Bill Stage) is trying to move that one to someone else; he's ready to move on.
