Suggestion, please?

Recommended Posts

So, I'm changing my eating patterns a tad. In the last few years, I've only been eating dinner. Nothing other than things to drink during the day, and only eating dinner. Horrible, I know. So that's why I'm changing it.

I've used Spirotein in the past, and found it almost palatable. Eating something first thing - or even third thing - in the morning actually makes me nauseous, but drinking something doesn't...don't understand it, but that's the way it is. I know breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but again, it's a great way to make me vomit if I actually eat something. So a protein drink is it.

Does anyone have any recommendations that are not "fad" manufactured? Something with a good ratio protein to carbs, low fat?

Thanks in advance for your help...

Water.

Don't eat (or drink) things that don't occur in nature. They're not good for you.

Um...yeah.

It's not like she's asking what flavor of liquid plastic to drink, Bry...

Michelle - I take it that the 'readily available' stuff like Slim-fast and the like don't work well for you? Do you have the option of "rolling your own" breakfast drink, so to speak?

No, the "readily available stuff" doesn't do anything for me at all. They taste weird to me - even the new stuff.

And yes, I have the option of making my own.

SwedishCelt, the problem I seem to have is there are too many choices sitting on the shelves at the heathy store. And they all cost a bit, so it's not like I can try a bit, dislike it, and then grab another cannister...et cetera. I know, it's personal taste, but still...

Kris, I've tried those yogurt drinks, and some are good...but the sugars in them are pretty high, aren't they? But it's a suggestion I might try. And sorry/good to hear you can't do the breakfast thing either...I thought I was alone in that.

Yah...slim-fast and the rest of that stuff tastes friggin nasty to me, too...

Here's one...depends on what you're looking for, nutrition wise, though.

Skim milk
Whey powder (good source of protein) (appropriate to amount of milk)
1 banana
Nestle's Quik (Hey, you have to have some taste, right?)

Failing the Nestle's, there's places that have diet flavor liquors... I'll see what I can find out for ya.

I've fought with my daughter for years on the breakfast thing. She refuses to eat before school and I have a hard time forcing her because she leaves at 6:30 am. I'm not hungry then either! She eats a mid-morning snack in between classes. Right now she likes the Nutrigrain Banana Muffin Bars. They have 170 calories, 4 grams of fat and no trans fat. I've had them, they taste like banana bread.

Sometimes I make protein shakes with Low-fat milk, low-fat plain yogurt, frozen oj concentrate and fresh fruit. They're really good and if you fill the blender, you'll get 2 servings of it so you can have one for later. I can give you the exact amounts if you like.

You really need to try for 6 small meals a day. I follow the Abs Diet plan for the most part. It's not really a diet, it's a way of changing your life and the food suggestions are good and balanced for the right amount of protein and carbs. It also has weight bearing exercises that you can do at home which is nice because you won't have to spend money on a gym.

Please try to eat healthier, you'll feel so much better and will have so much more energy, I promise!

Thanks. It's not really a diet, it's just a way of eating healthier and choosing the right food.

Michele, what is the cause of your nausea? Is it because you're not used to breakfast or something else? If it's the former, being consistent will help, and in time your body will hopefully adjust to it.
As others suggested, a plain, low- fat yogurt with fruit and maybe some protein powder shuld be fine.
And yes, fruit flavored yogurts are usually high in sugar unless they're labeled otherwise.
I hope this helps.

I went through a phase for a while where eating breakfast made me sick. I don't like the taste, texture, or cost of protein powders so what I would do was blend vanilla yogurt, fruit, and a little juice together and drink that. It was cheap, easy, and did wonders for settling my stomach in the morning.

Once I drank that for several weeks and tolerated it well I gradually added toast and then some eggs to my morning meal.

Hope that helps.

Ok, this I don't understand...Both you, Mama, and Michele are so absolutely attractive...why would you need a diet?

Do I just adore you or what? Darlin, the hug I got from you I will always remember...and you have a wonderful smile...but I think you've got me confused with someone else. :P;) I agree, though, 'Mama is gorgeous. Inside and out. (And I definitely am not flirting with Andi!)

Don't know. It's not because I don't like breakfast; give me a four, five hours awake, and I can eat anything with no issue.

It's always been like that. Apparently, as a child, I wouldn't eat breakfast, either. Gave Mom fits. And I have memories of putting my sausage and eggs in a napkin and giving it to the guard dog (a gorgeous Doberman Pincher) on my way to school in 6th grade.

There's no 'known' reason, and I don't think it's because I'm not used to it. It's been like that for as long as I can remember.

I suggest Living Fuel -- has the protein to carb ratio you're looking for, plus pretty much every nutrient you're going to need (minus calcium and iron) -- a great meal replacement. Only drawback is that it's a bit gritty, but once you get used to that, you'll like it.

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

Michelle,
I'm pretty much the same way after 25 years of early morning workouts courtesy of the USAF. However, I have changed a lot of that. There are many great (and not so great) ideas out there. What I do now is use a Myoplex Lite shake (made w/ skim milk) for my early 9-10 AM meal. It's available quite reasonable from www.allstarhealth.com. My mid day meal is normally soup and my "standard salad" (cucumber, tomatoe, salsa jack cheese) with a dressing of virgin olive oil, basalmic vinegar, and garlic pepper. My afternoon snack if a Clif bar product (Clif, Luna, or Builders bar). My pre ride snack is a Clif shot or Carb boom gel. Then I go for my bike ride (25-50 miles). My dinner is one of those really convenient Campbell soups as it's getting kind of late by then.

This "diet" seems to be working as I'm lighter, stronger, and faster than I have been (except for the recently fractured collar bone):(

Just my thoughts....

Tim

i used to do that when i was really inactive.
and it would end up being waay huge and then id feel even more like not doing anything

now that i ride my bike all the friggin time i eat like a hoover

this morning i had a leftover cheesy bean and rice burrito from last night. im not really sure where im going with this, but yeah, taco bell probably isnt the best idea, i mean it might work, or you could die trying more likely.

the only thing that could get me eating in the mornings was cutting down on the size of the dinner and forceing myself to eat something small that sticks well

Thanks for the idea...no, Taco Bell is definitely not something I'm going to rely on at all. ;)

IslandCOOL!!!!!!!! how are you, darling? I haven't seen or heard from you for ages! I will look into your suggestion, but at the moment, I'm doing pretty well with Spirotein and milk, w/a banana and some of that coffee flavoring (sugar free) to help with the taste (thanks again for that one, Mike!). Let's see how it goes...I just have such a hard time eating in the morning. My Dr. says to get something in my system within an hour of waking, and COFFEE doesn't count...but it hasn't been too long, so we'll see how it goes.

Great to see you here, darlin. Miss your laughing eyes.
