Learning to Drive a Car

Recommended Posts

When I had my learners permit at the age of 15, my father let me behind the wheel with the whole family inside the car. I still remember how proud I was to finally be driving. I was passing a car that contained a client of my father that he had just spoken to. I thought I would be cool B| and do what I’d seen other people do. I had one hand on the wheel and glanced over to smile broadly at the client as I passed. My car crossed the dividing line and my rear bumper hit his front fender… :o[:/]

Reminds me of what one of my AFF instructors told me about fixating on an object while landing. “If there was an outhouse in the middle of the desert, everyone would land on it.”

Do you remember what it was like when you were learning how to drive a car?

Oh yeah, with my dad in a Ford Pinto with a 4 speed stick. We used to go out to an empty village that was being developed from nothing, then went bankrupt. So it was deserted, except had streets everywhere.

Now I'm teaching some friends' 18 year old how to drive a stick because that's what they got for her. They don't have the patience for her either. So far she's doing alright.

Yep;

My Dad had a *new* 1975 Dodge Colt w/a manual transmission. He explained the whole thing to me, told me it was now my turn, then put it in neutral and applied the parking brake. On a hill.

The first time behind the wheel, I stole my Dad's company car...3-speed on the column Chevy station wagon.

I was the master of jackrabbit starts..you know...

My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

Yeah, I remember the first time driving. I was 14 and my cousin Brian who was in his mid 20's pulled his car over and told me to drive. So there I am on Alameda De Las Pulgus in San Mateo speeding down hill and noticed I need to make the next right turn and instead of slowing down like I should have I took the corner full speed and almost hit a parked car. I don't think my cousin has felt safe in a car with me ever since.

I seem to recall that God, Jesus and Hell were some how involved in the process.

"Jesus Christ! For Christ's Sake! God Damn it!
What the Hell were you thinking?"

And somehow defacating was better than holy water.

Holy Shit! God in heaven above . . . let me live through this and I . . . HOLY SHIT!!! Oh God please let me live through this . . . :D:D
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama
