closing loop material?

Recommended Posts

Yes,
But the fatter the old line the better.
For example, I only use the 1,000 pound (?) Spectra suspension line left over after re-lining tandems.
The thicker the suspension line you start with, the larger and uglier the knot you can tie in it.

"If you can't tie knots, tie lots!"

whatever line you have lying around will work. (anytime your buddies have canopies relined, keep the old lines, they'll make TONS of closing loops)

NO IT WON'T! This implys that twine, shoe lace, cotton string, 1000lb dacron, HMA etc will work. All of these things MAY work and probably have been used as closing loops. But closing loops that are too stiff, too thick, too weak all could cause problems. Use whats recommended. Other things are appropriate and can work well and not all rigs have always used type IIA but that doesn't include 'whatever line you have lying around'.>:(

True, however I usually assume anybody who can use a fid, and make their own closing loop has a certain degree of common sense.

The point I was trying to present is that you don't have to go out and buy the "proper" closing loop material when you have lots 700 lb spectra hanging around. (as Rob mentioned 1000lb spectra works great! I'm not sure how common that is at different DZ's)

The big thing is that you don't want your main container to deploy prematurely and potentially wrap your main around the tail after climb out.

1000 pound spectra works and shows wear so it can be replaced before it fails.

Gutted 550 Dacron works and shows wear so it can be replaced before it fails.

Other materials may have a smaller margin between usable and failing.
