chaoskitty 0 #1 April 9, 2006 I think I hurt my liver. I got a prescription of Darvocet for pain (ear infection) last week. Then I caught a cold so I got some nyquil friday night. Nyquil says dont take any other drugs containing acetaminophen. Well I didnt take a late dose of Darvocet because I went to a basketball game. I took three ibuprofen and three jack and cokes instead. So I took the nyquil when I got home and woke up the next day feeling like holy crap. Today is better, but I just looked up Darvocet online and it says: Do not take other over-the-counter and prescription products that contain acetaminophen. Too much acetaminophen could be dangerous and.. Avoid alcohol while taking Darvocet. Alcohol can increase drowsiness and dizziness caused by the medication which could be dangerous. Also, alcohol may increase the risk of liver problems when taking acetaminophen. and.. Together, these medicines may cause dangerous sedation, possibly resulting in unconsciousness or death. and also.. Do not take Darvocet if you suffer from depression or have suicidal thoughts. Why not?? Sounds like its gonna do a good job of killing you anyway! Back to the ibuprofen! (and NO, Lee, you can't have my Darvocets! )
NWFlyer 2 #2 April 9, 2006 Glad you're all good (well, except for the ear infection). I know a lot of people will still drink when they're taking narcotic pain relievers, but those type of drugs make me loopy enough as it is ... adding alcohol on top of it sucks. As for the acetaminophen thing, I think I remember reading those are usually long-term effects of acetaminophen and alcohol combined, so I doubt you did much liver damage in a short time."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. chaoskitty 0 #3 April 9, 2006 Yeah I havent had a fever since yesterday, and all I'm left with is a nasty cough. I thought about taking some robitussin, but with all the other crap in my system I'm kinda scared to.
NWFlyer 2 #4 April 9, 2006 Water. Tea (with honey and lemon is really soothing for the throat). More water. I'm all for drugs when I need them but sometimes you have to get them out of your system."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Get well..they had a program on the News about this kinda thing a few months back on over dose with ibuprofen and acetaminophen. JohnMitchell 16 #7 April 9, 2006 I try to find over the counter stuff without the "additives." You can buy straight Benadryl or Sudafed, then add analgesics on top of that if you need to. That let's you take only the drugs you need, and the cost is less for plain vanilla medications than the hyped up cure alls. I've even had to bring up the acetaminophen limit with medical doctors. It seems to slip their minds sometimes.

lauraliscious 0 #9 April 9, 2006 I hope your liver gets better real soon. I'm on all sorts of meds right now for a cold too. But no pain killers. And no alcohol. Although I'm thinking at this point a few strong drinks might kill all those germs... chaoskitty 0 #13 April 9, 2006 Yes, thanks. I didn't know that Darvocet was acetaminophen when I asked uncle Jack for a little relief. I'm now having 2 days of protein- green veggies-water only to get all the meds out of my system.
