Nightingale 0 #27 April 6, 2006 Right now, I'm working as a tutor. I love: working with kids seeing the lightbulb go on the first time an algebra student understands the quadratic formula being able to choose who I work with being able to choose what hours I will work being able to choose where I will work making $25 an hour. pretty much being my own boss. I hate: parents who send their straight A honors student to me for "enrichment." Usually the kid doesn't want to be there and would rather be out with his friends or playing soccer and getting some exercise, because he already works his tail off in school. What kid wants extra homework?! Students who don't want to learn. They're wasting my time and their time and their parents' money. You can't force a kid to learn, and I'd much rather devote my time to a kid who wants help than waste it on someone who refuses to help themself. (students who are frustrated because they don't get it are different and not the ones I'm talking about here). I love: being able to walk away from students like that and have new students filling those slots within a day or so. It's wonderful to have that kind of freedom. Viking 0 #28 April 6, 2006 I love my job b/c i get to see all kinds of people see alot of interesting stuff. For the most part I work with smart people. I love working with the CT scanner b/c I'v learned how to do everything except actually do the scan. I love the look on peoples faces when i show up at there door with a wheelchair to discharge them. I hate my job b/c I on many occasions have transfered someone to another floor to pass away. It sucks being in the elavator with someone who has a non-rebreather mask with 15 liters of O2 running and they are still gasping. I hate lazy nurses that call the lift team for every little thing they don't want to do. I HATE when a nurse tries to complain when i don't bring them back a "good" bed after a patient transfers off the floor. They want me to put the patient through a bed to bed transfer just so they can keep there bed with a scale and a bed alarm. I hate hearing "Code Blue room...." over the intercom that means i have to run from were ever i am to that location and help to save someone. Thankfully i'v only had to do CPR on one person so far. I HATE the sound of ribs seperating from the sternam during CPR. niolosoiale 0 #35 April 6, 2006 I like the schedule (7:30a - 4:30p) but I hate having a late night (7:30a - 7:00p). Specifically when I work two because my boss wants me to work his and I have no justification to say no, plus I don't want to say no as it makes me look like I'm trying to shed responsibility. I also hate late nights since I have to do a job that I'm not comfortable with doing (writing up customer vehicles for service). I hate late nights. Period. I hate filing and the fact that I have to do it 2-3 hours a day to stay caught up since no one else will do it. I want to spend more time advancing my knowledge/skills in warranty administration. I like the 1 hour lunches. I like my boss being flexible about my time (I think all the overtime compensates for coming in 10 minutes late every day.) I like the people, except for a few of the salesmen. I hate the fact that my boss seems to have a knack for hiring people who are little more than short-term liability. I hate that my boss raised the price of oil changes by 9 cents. It was 28.05 which made the combination of oil change and any other pure labor operation (tire rotations, alignments, balancing, etc) come out to an even dollar amount. So now instead of a oil change and rotate costing $44.00, they cost $44.09. His logic in doing it? "I wanted to help us get a little more fromt he oil changes." The result -- more hassle in making change for cash customers, I'm almost sure that there are some people that view that extra 9 cents as a little prick in the side, oh, and we increased our sales by $27 for all the trouble. $27 out of an average $120,000 monthly gross profit. I hate Thursdays. No reason other than I find it more difficult to get out of bed on thursday than any other day of the week. I like the idea of doing what I was hired to do, but I do not like doing the work that other people should have no trouble doing. Unfortunately, I end up feeling like mortar in the cracks. GogglesnTeeth 6 #36 April 6, 2006 Once upon a time.... I enjoyed working in television. The stress of only getting one shot to get a newscast out right the first time. The thrill of knowing what is going on in the world first and then being a part of the team that told the masses the news. The excitement of working with all the modern technology and computers, making them do what they are not designed to do.... etc. Now the thrill is gone. I'm sick of the news business, the politics in the office, the corporate backstabing that goes on, and frankly, the mindless philosophy of "if it bleeds, it leads." And of course, the "we'll get it on the air first, and if the info is incorrect, we'll blame someone else or correct it later. Needless to say, I need out of the TV business. I know all jobs have their downsides.... but I no longer find it fun. Oh well, I need to get a job in computers or something, till then, I jump till the credit cards say no!!! Shotgun 1 #37 April 6, 2006 I hate that I don't get enough work to earn a living with this job (but it's ok while I'm going to school), and that my work schedule is rather erratic. And I hate having to drive up and down steep muddy hills with my little stick-shift pickup (though I do get a nice vertigo/adrenaline rush from it sometimes ). The company I work for contracts out to the city so we get paid what is called "fair wage" by the city ($25.00 hr. cnd.) (Smoke testing of sanitary sewer systems is done to find places where ground water and storm runoff can enter the sewer system. A large downdraft fan with a gasoline engine, is placed on top of open manholes at the section to be tested. Smoke is created using liquid smoke. The fan creates a pressure differential that forces the artificial smoke into the sewer at a pressure just above atmospheric. With properly installed plumbing the traps prevent the smoke from entering the buildings/homes and redirected it out the plumbing vents.) I am employed as a "smoke tester" checking the area around each building/home in the section being tested and check for smoke plumes. Plumes coming from plumbing vents are normal but smoke plumes outside of the manhole rim are not. (smoke coming from cracks in sidewalks/ driveways/ storm drains/ around power poles/ …(tons of sewer systems are crossed with storm drains) I carry binoculars, and a video camera to record defects, also record on my map the address etc. The best part of my day is getting access to the roof tops of high-rises (awesome views!) and checking out beauty gardens in peoples back yards. Many grow ops direct smell into sewer lines- so when manhole is lifted ya can sure tell there is a grow op in that block!! (halarious!) At the end of each section I edit video and mapping for city reports. The company has kewl cameras that run inside sewer line to detect defects like roots from trees, re: city line problems/ or building/home owners property. Next week we start testing the city of White Rock (beauty, right on the beach) and will work there for a few months.
