ROK 0 #2 March 24, 2006 Some advise: Get a crate (if you don't already have one) Never, I repeat NEVER feed the dog people food. Let the puppy sleep as often as it likes. Take it with you everywhere you go! Question- Who was the breeder? If you need books on Ridgebacks, or advise from experience (they are different than a lot of dogs), email me and I'll help you out. loves2jump2 0 #3 March 24, 2006 He/She is beautiful. Love the wrinkles! Ridebacks are great dogs! I agree with the crate training. Get the one that grows with your dog that way you don’t spend a small fortune on crates. I crate trained all my Golden’s and never had any problems. As far as people food, I do let them have fresh fruit and veggies sometimes but that’s it. Good luck with him/her!
Andy_Copland 0 #4 March 24, 2006 Thanks A lot for the reply mate. Its not actually my dog but i'll be the middle man if my buddy wants to know anything. I've kept a lovely Jack Russel and a brilliant Rottweiler without any trouble and i can tell this 7 week old Ridgeback is going to be a real challenge i can tell, i knew they were difficult dogs but i really can see him struggling sooner or later, im struggling now with him and only been here a day! Its a bitch which kind of makes it harder as i was reading they are a bit more of a handful than a male. If he needs anything i'll be sure to ask you, thanks for offering your help, im 99% sure im going to need it :)1338 People aint made of nothin' but water and shit. xine100 0 #7 March 25, 2006 He's adorable! Ridgies are great dogs (I've got one too) and I definitely agree with the crate training idea- I don't think I would have survived his puppyhood without one! At a year and a half old, he still curls up in his crate when he's tired. Also- get your pup into obdedience training as soon as possible. Ridgebacks can be very independant and headstrong and respond best to "positive reinforcemet" type of training - it will make your life alot easier if you start his training when he's still a cute cuddly little bundle that follows you everywhere! Good luck!
skycat 0 #8 March 25, 2006 Here is a great read on puppies that your friend needs to read. I'm Your Puppy Crate training will save your sanity, never use it as punishment, and to make crate training easier make it the best place in the world by feeding all meals in it and periodically toss treats in it for her to find. Also never leave her unsupervised, if you can't be watching her 100% of the time (tying her leash to your belt can really help with this) put her in her crate. I also have a breed that is prone to being dominant and headstrong (my dog is both in spades) and while they are a lot of work the pride and satisfaction you get from them being well trained and well behaved is incredible. Also I'm against these petsmart puppy classes, if you go to a trainer find a good one, I've seen many dogs turn dog agressive after petsmart training because dogs bullying other dogs is allowed and what happens is the puppy learns if it's agressive to other dogs that dog will go away which quickly turns to I'll just be agressive so the other dog doesn't even try to bully me. So just do your reasearch when it comes to trainers, with my boy I've learned there are many out there who don't know how to handle dominant high drive dogs. (I was told by one trainer he should be put down)Fly it like you stole it!
