I like my job pretty well, most of the time.

Yeah, but you don't want to think about what you're making on an hourly basis. . .

Trust me on this.

Ain't that the truth! I don't have to trust you.... Out of the last 4 nights, I've slept twice. Work all day, work all night, work all day....sleep...work all day...sleep....work all day, work all night, work all day. Know that routine???

Residents make a little more than in the past, but it's still chicken feed.

Yup. Except now I am happy to get paid for it coming up this year. :P

I remember working out the salary of an intern with one of the new peds guys last summer......something like $8.75 an hour. :(:(:(

BUT....the beauty is that there's moonlighting. Which was what I did last night. It takes me two weeks to earn in my residency what I made last night in a little ER....(and I did get to snooze a little).

It was pointed out to me, though, that too much work, despite the pay, can cut into your sanity time. I think that's probably true.

I think people (except assholes) get excellent care in the ER. If you get bad care from me, just think of yourself as an asshole. :o

I did a quick scan and I don't think I saw any job listed that worked as many average hours as lawyers. We apparently make good money, though it's interesting to note that the "median hourly" is so much less than the "average hourly." Probably because of the amount of money that the lower associates make.

I mean, you've got new associates in big firms taking in 135k per year. A large number of them are REQUIRED to bill 2,100 hours per year, or roughly 40 hours per week. About $64.00 per hour.

Note that "billable" hours are different from "work hours." You can expect to bill roughly 2/3 of the hours you work. This means that they can expect to put in 60 hours to get 40 hours. This lowers the average "hourly" to $43 per hour.

Sure, it's a lot of money to most. But the quality of life "inhales with gusto." It's why so many lawyers leave the big firms and go into a public interest firm, where they'll take a 50 percent pay cut but have a better quality of life.

I shoulda lived my dream and became a pilot...

Edited to add: I see that actors and directors make good money. I wonder how much of that is due to the outliers making $10 million -$20 million per film.

believe it or not, there are some companies that find and sell things that come out of the ground. i would not be surprised if 74K was the starting salary for a geologist.

please let me know if this post was confusing.

I knew a guy that studied Geology in school but eventually abandoned the field and went into IT.

He claimed that most geology jobs were gov't related survey type work or the RAND corporation, and either way had crappy hours and around $20k starting salary in the '90s.

Maybe by geologist they probably mean the researcher types that walk into active volcanoes.
My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
