Which IPOD?

Recommended Posts

Hey!

I just got my taxes back today, so I'm getting my boyfriend an Ipod.

So which one do I get? He needs something durable because he'll use it at work (construction) and he's a music fanatic so the more space the better.

Which one gives you the most bang for your buck considering durability, and space?

Nano or 30gb?

I heard from someone that the batteries on the nano die after 1.5 years and the whole thing needs to be replaced. Is that true?

Also, do you know if you can purchase extended warranties?

Thanks guys!

No to the first question. All batteries die eventually, depending on use, but the battery can be replaced. It's not as easy as a normal iPod, but it's far from impossible. That rumour is spread by mentally deficient alarmists. Usually these people are pissed that their MP3 player isn't as popular as the iPod :D

Yes to the second. Apple offers a 3year warranty, which covers the battery too.

The Nano doesn't hold nearly as much as the HD-based iPods, but it'll take more abuse. Any HD-based MP3 player is going to be vulnurable to data loss and/or drive failure of it's jarred while the drive is spinning. Also, you can't use 'em while skydiving! Nano is jumpable though! :D

I think most guys would rather have their whole music collection than a smaller player, for what it's worth. Just tell him not to smack it whilst it's running ;)

Uggggg!!!!! Not again!!:S:o:D

Ipods Suck. Get another MP3 Player.

Unless you want to Pay more for a Devise that does Less.

We really need a "rolling eyes" smiley.

The 1% of the population, if that, who wants the features the iPod doesn't offer (like what? FM Radio? Who the hell actually choses to listen to that shit?) will get the player that has the features they want.

Most people want a player that's easy to use, and works with the most popular legal online music source. That's the iPod.

Ignoring the argument about NOT getting an iPod (I prefer the Dell DJ myself, but iPods are still nice), I will respond to the question you actually asked. ;)

If I were your boyfriend, I would want more space. SO I would go for the 30 Gb. But I have alot of music and need more than the nano offers.

As for batteries, all iPod batteries will eventually die and need to be replaced. I believe the cost is around 100 bux. Don't quote me; I don't actually own one. :)
HOWEVER, if your boyfriend is at all savvy with a screwdriver, you can buy kits and change the battery after it dies yourself for much cheaper.
Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

That is where I disagree.
The Ipod will NOT play WMA format Songs. My first nightmare with my Ipod cam from the fact I bought a BUNCH of legally Downloaded songs off Napster.
Because they Were LEGALLY purchased "Rights Managed" Songs.. Itunes (or any other software for that matter) would not convert them.

ANY other MP3 Player in the world will play them. Just NOT the iPod. (Cause WMA is Windows Media and Apple doesnt like Windows.)

Ipod tries to force you to use iTunes. Which SUCKS for a very large Music collection.

Ipod tried to prevent you from easily transferring Files (Songs or otherwise) to and from the devise without using iTunes.

Ipods do NOT have easily replaceable batteries. Yes you can HACK the devise to replace the Battery when it dies.. But why Bother.. Just buy a devise that has a replaceable Battery..

And WHAT is it that Ipod does that other MP3 Players dont do?? NOTHING!!

And Im done here.. I am leaving to catch a Plane to a Happy Place now!!:P

$39 for the battery if you're willing to do it yourself. I could teach a triplegic monkey with Down's syndrome to do it, too.

Yeah, mine was a nicer way of saying that. :D

Forget what the haters say.;)

There's a reason why the iPod is so amazingly popular. It. Just. Works.

The Nano is pretty indestructible, but he'll have more space on the 30GB. I have a 20GB model right now and I've dropped it several times, sent it flying off the seat of my car, and had to rescue it from my ferrets once. It still keeps cranking out the tunes.B|

It has a far superior interface and design. THat's what it does better.

My point is still correct. iTunes is the most popular legitimate way of getting music online. This is a fact, and thus you were disagreeing with a fact. It's like saying that I'm not sitting on a futon right now. You might believe it, but you'd still be wrong.

No, it won't play WMA, but WMA's a shitty format anyway. I won't argue I think it should play everything out there, but oh well.

The battery is easily replaced if you have a clue. You pop open the case, unclip the connector, and put on the new one. I've actually done it, have you?

If you don't want to use iTunes, there are a number of other software applications that'll let you move music to it. Apple makes it difficult to take the music back off because they're trying to limit pirating. Again, easy to get around with alternate software.

God forbid people actually think for themselves and do a little research before spouting off on something they obviously do not have any firsthand knowledge of.

Just don't jump with it :D Turns out they're not kidding about that 10,000 foot unpressurised operation limit on hard drives! Not enough air density to float the heads above the platters. That's the reason I bought a nano after I killed my 30GB iPod last year :D

Dude, don't feed the badgers. They get angry. :D

For the general population member that just wants to play and get music like the rest of the general population, iPod is the way to go.

As for this having to use iTunes (or trying to force you) stuff: bullshit. My friend gets NO music from iTunes. He aquires his by "other" means and he has NO problem getting the music on and off.

Dammit, I fed the badger. :D

WMA as a format is right up there with OGG. It never took off and never really will. Sure, so Windows does WMA support natively. Congrats. In the meanwhile, the other 90% of us are using MP3

see above

False. I've never loaded iTunes on my PC and I've been using an iPod for several years now. I use EphPod and MusicMatch Jukebox. My collection is at ~100GB / 17,000 tracks and MusicMatch handles it just fine. I have used iTunes on a friend's PC and it was quite easy to use on his large collection.

Ipod tried to prevent you from easily transferring Files (Songs or otherwise) to and from the devise without using iTunes.
It's drag & drop with EphPod or MusicMatch

Ipods do NOT have easily replaceable batteries. Yes you can HACK the devise to replace the Battery when it dies.. But why Bother.. Just buy a devise that has a replaceable Battery..
Feh. It takes less than 10 minutes if you're even partially mechanically inclined.

And WHAT is it that Ipod does that other MP3 Players dont do?? NOTHING!!
And yet so many others try to be just like the iPod.;)

OK.. One last post and then I really do have a flight to catch..

I bought the Hype. I Bought the iPod. I tried to use it for almost a year now. I keep finding more and more I cant do with it.

Yes, I am very technical. I am an engineer that now owns a Software company.

I know the iPod very well. It is a Very Limited devise compare to others on the Market. I dont like having to Jump through Back doors and use third party software to do simple things like Move files back and forth off a storage devise. ITunes sucks even worse.

Very typical of Apples "Let us do the Thinking for you" mentality.

And That is my last comment on this (for today anyway!!):P.

Yeah, it's that whole 'facts' thing that people ahve issues with ;) Usually these are the same people who hate any popular music BECAUSE it is popular. I swear to god some people will say that breathing sucks because everybody does it now, and they were big in the breathing scene back when it was underground.

A very limited device? It just needs to play music, which it does extremely well. What else do you want it to do? Check your e-mail?

Sheesh.

And no third-party software is needed to move files on and off if you're just using it for storage. Plug it into a Windows / Mac / Linux box via USB or FireWire and it shows up as another hard drive. Nothing could be simpler.:S
