Just wondering if there are others who feel the same way. I think some are cool now...but in 20 years when your skin is all nasty and saggy then it's not cool, so I don't think I'll get one. jheadley 0 #5 March 11, 2006 Most of my skydiver friends have tatoos and I think that is one of the stupidest things a person can do to themself. I've talked to way too many people in their 40s and older who got tatoos when they were young and wish they never did. I've actually talked to a few people in their 20s who felt the same way. I've seen some really tasteful ones and some that look downright sexy. I think it all depends on the talent of the artist doing it. CanuckInUSA 0 #14 March 11, 2006 There are days that I look at my one Tattoo and think "what was I thinking" and other days that I look at it and say "cool". But I don't regret my Tattoo. It's something that I can easily hide when I'm around people who look down on those with Tattoos. To each their own, if you want one (or more than one) you'll get them. If you don't want one, then you'll never get one. But to address why you see many skydivers with one, well just look at the type of people the sport attracts. I'm going through some growing pains right now with my new employer (I'm a software developer and the IT world is very nerdy full of whimpy stereo-types) now that word has gotten out to everyone (including management) that I'm this suicudal skydiver and the product managers are leary about giving me work (I bet if they knew I was a jumper before being offered my contract I never would have been offered it). These are the sort of people who take no risks at all in their lives. Not exactly the type of people who get Tattoos now are they? It would be nice if people stopped judging each other, but that is a pipe dream I guess. I'm not saying you're judging us Tattoo'ers, but maybe you are. But it's okay if you don't want one. I would never just go to a tattoo parlor and pick something off of the wall just for the sake of getting a tattoo. To each his own. I love tattoos, and plan on getting many more. SkydiveStMarys 0 #16 March 11, 2006 Most who have a tattoo did not get one because it was a "trend". Tattoos are a way of telling a "story" or never "forgetting" a significant time in ones life. Some will tell you that they are "addictive", I find this to be true for myself...whether it is for anyone else that is hard for me to say...I have four...each one has a special meaning behind it....a "story" if you will...Each time I got one I waited anywhere from 6 months to a year to make sure it is what I really wanted...I put alot of thought into each one and I thought about WHY I wanted each one. For me my tattoos are not about being a "trend", it signifies something VERY specific for me and there is a story behind each one...one being very specific and all I have to do is look at it and it brings fond memories, BUT it also reminds me not to go down that road again. My four tattoos are truly is a works of art..one of a kind....6 months to a year of thought and exactly "what" I wanted to convy to MYSELF is in each one. The one thing that did peak my interest in tattoos was that my Grandfather had a few and I was always fascinated by his tattoos as a little girl. My family says that I am very much like my Grandfather...he passed away many many moons ago. Like I said, I've seen some really nice ones and some that I found to be quite sexy. My personal preference is that I don't want one for myself. Speaking of the IT world, my younger brother is an IT manager. I agree there are a lot of nerds in the field, but he is far from one. He's quite the daredevil himself. One thing he hasn't done though is skydive. I've tried to get him out there and he says he really wants to do it, but his wife objects. It may have something to do with the fact that she's about to give birth in the next couple of weeks. I went with my girlfriend to get a flowery tribal last night and it made me want it even more. Her tribal took 3 1/2 hours in the chair and it looks great. Greenie in training. My Grandfather whipped the living daylights out of a U.S. Army Captain, two U.S. Army Seargents,and a U.S. Navy Petty Officer (2 Purple hearts, a Silver Star, and a Bronze Star between them) So I don't really know if I the reason I don't want a tattoo is because of that story or what... They take a lot of commitment and if you are going to get a tattoo i suggest that you really take some time and think about what you're getting (don't jsut go and choose some flash off the wall) so that 40's years down the road you do'nt end up like the people on this thread are talking about and regret ever getting one. To me they are just another form of artistic expression for things that i am incredibly passionate about and things in my life that will mean something to me for the rest of my life no matter how my life changes. My one (and only so far) tattoo is a skydiving inspired tattoo, which in my mind symbolizes not the "coolness" or trendyness" of skydiving, but the amazing people in the community that i have met and the incredible lifelong friends that i have made. This is something that i will always cherish.....no matter how wrinkly my skin gets! Bottom line, do what you want to do, try to make sure that you will like the work you get done in the future, and please don't judge others for the things they've done....life's to short.
