They have to read the forums anyway... so it really makes me think that besides making someone angry, that clicking the Banned button and setting the banning time for 2 weeks, 3 days, 60 days, permanent... whatever is not THAT much grief.

I'm sure it's a pain to clean up certain threads but if someone accepts a moderator job, that's what they get to do sometimes.

I'd say that half my posts I start typing (at 95 wpm), get my initial reaction down, consider it, and then think to myself, self, "Why bother with a considered response that some banmeister is going to slash" and then just refresh the screen without posting.

Nope, it's not a general rule. It's a moderator judgement call.

I've asked Alex to change his avatar, because I think it creates confusion in our community, and I believe that one of the fundamental principles of this community (and almost any on-line community) is that people should have consistent identities.

Note the use of the word "asked" in the above sentence. I'd prefer that we work at that level.
