Washington also now has a sanctioned girls wrestling league and championship tournament that shares venue with the boys tournament (Mat Classic). Here's a brief article.

That's great! If she does decide to continue on, that will be a better venue for her to compete in throughout the teen years, I would think. That would allow girls to continue wrestling after they've experienced some changes in their body shapes without feeling wary of wrestling the opposite sex. For right now, a 58 pound 4 foot nothin' 9 year old girl will be just fine with the others I suspect. I'll be at practice so mama will be watching. :)

One thing though, if she does follow through and take a serious interest. Keep close tabs on her weight management.

That is a BIG concern, she has already made mention of never wanting to be 'fat'. My fault really; she sees all the struggle I go through to try to regain my own health and she thinks that the same thing will happen to her. We will deifintely keep a very watchful eye on that, thank you.

I wrestled waaaay back in high school. Wasn't that good though. [:/] Fast forward 20+ years & they have an AWESOME female wrestler named Brittany Woodall, I believe she's a junior this year. This article is from last year, scroll down about half way for her story. http://wrestlegirl.com/gnews1334.htm I watched her wipe up the mat with her opponents at a tournament last year! Find a real wrestling club. Anyone who puts "buzzsaw" on their wrestling club name is a fucking tool and is prolly more about the sensational aspects and trying to be trendy and cool than actual wrestling.

Actually this looks pretty legit. I forgot to ask if they are affiliated with the Buzzsaw wrestling in Idaho, but what I saw tonight was a bunch of guys that genuinely cared about getting kids interested in wrestling.

And my little baby did AWESOME!!! She can't wait to go back on Thursday. Everyone was so impressed with my little 58 pound bundle of wrestling happiness!

:| I am at a loss. Friday my beautiful angel brings home a flyer for 'Buzzsaw' wrestling club. She tells me she wants to do it, but was afraid that I would 'freak out' if she told me.

Freak out? Because my little girl wants to compete in a boy's world? Naw, I'd never understand anything like that...:S. I'm shocked. She knows her mama was in the army, is a pilot, is a skydiver, lifts weights, and played baseball with boys as a kid...and she's worried about being a tomboy...:D:S

I'm not worried about my little Sprout being a tomboy...but I really don't know much about kids' wrestling...tonight is her first practice, and I'm not sure what I am supposed to dress her in. We don't have time to buy one of those unitard thingy's or wrestling shoes...

Any help? :)

I had a SO who really dug wrestling - for real - holds, locks, throwing each other around, she was pretty good - interesting girl, and definitely not a tomboy. Anyway, I'd go out there and check out the operation, talk to the coach or coaches, and get their recommendations.
