Warhammer help?

Recommended Posts

My nephew just turned 12, and apparently he's just getting into Warhammer Space Marines. Since I'm just a clueless auntie, who will be going in on the present with her clueless father, any ideas on what a particularly good character/whatever is?

thanks

If you're talking about Warhammer 40k(http://us.games-workshop.com/games/40K/spacemarines/default.htm) I don't know if there are "characters" per say.

Warhammer 40k is a miniatures game. Find out what race he likes(there are several) and you could get him a unit of miniatures. Games Workshop makes Warhammer and they have a gift catalog online: http://us.games-workshop.com/shopping/default.htm

Note that there's "Warhammer" and "Warhammer 40k". The 40k has the space marines.

Typically this stuff can be very personalized though. Your nephew might have a specific regiment he's collecting or looking for.

Also, all of the above assumes you're talking about the minature game. There could be something new out called Warhammer Space Marines I've never heard of.

The idea of Warhammer is that you build up an army of minature soldiers and then you fight battles with your mates. There are a few special characters but if he's just starting he'd be better off building up number of regular troops, or tanks.

My advice would be to find out what it is that he really wants - to make sure you've got the right race of army. Be warned though - it's really quite expensive! I stopped playing five or six years ago when it was pretty expensive and the prices were going up fairly regularly.

MarkM was right about 40K though - your nephew won't be happy if you get him stuff from the wrong game [:/]

If you peruse their catalog to get a feel for the prices and know how much you're willing to spend on him.... I would take him to the store on his Birthday and tell him to pick out exactly what he wants.

The warhammer 40k minatures come unpainted and require some assembly. In addition to playing fantasy wargames with your minatures some people are also really into painting and detailing them, then going to conventions for all the world to see.:$ If that is your nephew he may need some painting/ hobby supplies as well.

if you want to go cheaper, and he has a PC, then get him the PC game Warhammer 40K - its a real time strategy/war simulator. its pretty intensely violent though, so make sure its cool with the parents...and it does have the Space Marines (or you can play as the orcs).

Hey!

painting warhammer citadel miniatures rawks!

- of course the dark sorceror of chaos was my son's choice. The detail we got was priceless- the collection has grown over years....this winter I painted the riding chaos dragon. We store all the miniatures in styrofoam blocks cut for their shapes. He takes them to the local comic shop in his tool kit, where he plays the board game with friends.

He played Warhammer online until his character was worth money on e-bay.....then he waited until he got the best price before selling it. I couldn't believe how many people would inspire to buy a character to play the game.

At times I wondered if he was addicted but as his computer was in my office, I was in the room while he played- his keyboard/spelling skills became outrageous. He also learned to time his games (self dicipline)

Anyhooo,
Time spent together painting detail was and still is enjoyed.
