WHAT IS RISK TO YOU?

Recommended Posts

I'll go line by line for you. It doesn't take a genius to know the answers.

"Do you consider yourself a risk taker?" What person who has ever left a "perfectly good" aircraft for the fun of it is NOT a risk taker.

"what level of risk do you belive skydiving involves." Only the risk of death or of great bodily injury. Hurling yourself bodily at a planet from 2 miles up seems to be about as risky as you can get, doesn't it?

"other than skydiving, do you exhibit risky behavior?" Now, here's where people can differ. I'm in a career notorious for stress-related burn-out, alcoholism and early death. Does that count?

"do you believe the idea that skydivers are crazy sensation seekers?" "Crazy?" No, not necessarily. Some are. "Sensation seekers?" Well, we don't do it because it makes us feel like we are sleeping. It feels good, it is exciting. It's the only thing to explain why we do it, and why we get hooked.

"how do you eliminate risk in your sport?" You don't. You manage it. But risk will always be there.

My wife is hotter than your wife.

Cannot the same be said for "Just about" verything in the world - hell going to work is a pretty big risk if you live in NY.

Not so much here :D-

Skydiving is risky, but not dangerous. The incidence of failure is low, but when things fail, they tend to fail catastrophically. The same is true of injuries in the sport. There are few, but when they do occur, they tend to be severe.

There exists a cultural norm in skydiving that enforces safety. Although the boundaries of what constitutes safe is somewhat diffuse, (normally based on experience) when those boundaries are crossed, those who cross them are dealt with in sometimes very harsh ways.
Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... It really pisses him off.

Asking women out on dates... that's risky... I mean... what if they say yes.

I so hate that. Then I gotta figure out where we're gonna go on the date, whether or not I should plan on getting lucky(which then opens up a whole new set of decisions to make: ribbed, not ribbed, etc).

But oh wait, this poll. I'm male and I've decided I don't understand the poll options.

Hey,
Your study design is a bit flawed. If you would like some help designing a quick survey, send me a PM.
I have a PhD in experimental psychology so I might be able to help...

On a more topical note:

I mentioned to a Lt Col once that I skydived and pointed out that he would "never consider" doing something like that because he was "Risk Averse" instead we as skydivers generally migitate (and subsiquently minimize) the risks of the sport as much as possible but does that mean that jumping out of airplanes is not risky. Absolutely not but there other more seemingly mundain things that you can do that are risky as well.

A personal example: I use to cycle (I don't so much now because I don't have a bike at the moment) but I have nearly been hit by more then one car and have actually been hit by at least on car while on my bike.

I also am an avid runner and yet I have known people personally that have been hit by cars while out running.

The risks in these activities can be reduced as well by wearing bright (reflective) outfits and having the required headgear (while cycling) but not eliminated with out sticking to a track which still has risks.

hey, i am a jumper/college student doing research on the decision making process and risk taking in males and females. please take a minute and take this poll. thanks!

risk to me is doing activities where there are stupid people present. the more stupid people, the more risk...like driving down the highway for example, far more risky than sharing the sky with 20-odd jumpers spaced adequately apart.

What about the risk of ACCEPTING a date?

From a chick's perspective... if the guy seems much more into you (me) than I am into him, and he is already wondering about ribbed versus not ribbed...

My risk is the degree of discomfort while I try to figure out if he is - in reality - an acceptable person to hang out with or not.

But... given your parameters, he's probably just looking to get laid anyway [:/]

Mostly yeah, but unless she is a total whore then we have accepted the fac tthat we must play along with the games women play in order that we get to our end as well. Every now and then along the way we find out that we actually like her, and slide into a relationship.

It's really quite a simple game. A day to learn, and no one will ever master it.

Do you consider yourself a risk taker?

Yup. Calculated risks, but risks just the same.

What level of risk do you belive skydiving involves?

Overall, pretty high. Nothing about throwing myself at the ground at a high rate of speed seems all that safe to me. Individually, pretty low due to the things I do and don't do to mitigate or manage those risks.

Other than skydiving, do you exhibit risky behavior?

You mean like driving recklessly, drinking lots of alcohol, having unprotected sex, doing drugs, riding a motorcycle and listening to loud music? No. I do not now and have never in the past done any of those things. ;)

Do you believe the idea that skydivers are crazy sensation seekers?

No. Skydivers are normal. It's the people who spend life on the couch watching American Idol who are crazy.

How do you eliminate risk in your sport?

Can't eliminate it. Instead I manage it. I don't jump when I'm sick or excessively tired. I jump canopies that are appropriate in size for me to land safely given my ability and currency levels. I check my gear prior to putting it on. I have someone else check my gear prior to getting on the airplane. I don't jump when weather conditions are sketchy. I don't jump with cameras or people attached to my body. I don't jump after drinking alcohol. Etc....
