Orange1 0 #1 February 22, 2006 wtf did you DO to keep yourself from going crazy about not being able to jump? It's been less than 3 weeks, if I believe my OS it's another 8 months to go before I can jump, and I am already freaking out. I want to smell the air at altitude, I get depressed when I see emails going out for fun competitions that I would have entered, I love hearing from my buddies how cool their jumps were but am so envious that I can't be there... aaaaaarrrrrgggghhhhhh! help!!!!!! I have been grounded about a year, however not all because if injury...started that way but then finances and lack of insurance kept me on the ground. If all goes well that will be over shortly Anyway, I picked up a part time gig to entertain myself. The air will be there, dont worry about that, worry about getting yourself fixed. Sitting and dwelling on it will not make things better. Girlfalldown 0 #6 February 22, 2006 I've been out twice now for 2 different spine surgeries. Here's what you do. Pace around the house going FUCK FUCK FUCK. Watch a lot of lame TV and take pain meds and drink wine. Play online poker and yell FUCK a lot. Be really really bitchy and irritable. Post Whore on dz.com and then wonder if maybe you should have deleted those posts... Complain. Feel sorry for yourself. Begin hating your job. Missing your friends. Walk around being grumpy and wondering what the fuck to do with yourself. Drink some. Drink a lot. Then, slowly, you start wondering what you did before skydiving came along. You start doing things that you used to do before you skydived. Going to movies, cooking, going out with friends and having friends over. Seeing concerts, live shows, going to parties that you never went to because you wanted to get up early to skydive. Then just when you start feeling comfortable again you usually do a jump. It's usually a bit too soon and causes a teeny bit of re-injury so it takes you out for an extra month or two and you get back to the bitching and moaning stage of it all. Then, eventually, you realize you feel pretty good. You get back to the gym. You start going to the DZ again every few weekends and the next thing you know you're back to normal, jumping your lil ass off. That's what you do. Oh and send me all your pain meds when you're through. I like those things. -------------- (Do not, I repeat DO NOT, take my posts seriously.)

Airman1270 0 #8 February 22, 2006 My longest layoff was about ten months after my broken ankle on my first jump. Of course, I wasn't a seasoned jumper, accustomed to DZ life, etc. so there was no anxiety over what I was missing. (That came later when I realized that I would never be able to pursue the sport regularly for a variety of reasons.) There have been many layoffs over the years, usually due to economic and/or family priorities. This weekend, weather permitting, I expect to be back after three months off. Best of luck on your recovery! Cheers, Jon S.
Orange1 0 #9 February 22, 2006 LOL!!!! what a classic post! QuotePace around the house going FUCK FUCK FUCK. I would do that.... if i COULD pace. Can i do it while sitting on my butt? (yeah, i managed to take both legs out) My only major other previous interest was horseriding which will also be out for a while Apart from that... jeez, what DID i do before i discovered skydiving?? Seems to have been blanked out my memory! So basically from the posts it seems some combination of being drunk and abusing my pankillers will do it Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. rapter 0 #10 February 22, 2006 I was ground bound with a broken arm for 6 weeks last Sept. and years ago I was out for 4 week with a broken foot, none were caused jumping. Only the good die young, so I have found immortality,
skybytch 273 #11 February 22, 2006 I was out for 8 months after back surgery, 6 of those off work. Basically I did most of what GFD said except for the online poker thing. Instead of poker I got real into a 3d chat site (Cybertown - it was free back then but costs $$ now) but any of the mmpg's (Ultima Online, Ever Crack, etc) would do just as well. Pain meds are good for helping you not give as much of a shit. So is the sticky stinky green stuff if you're into that. Getting out of the house once or twice a week while you're non-mobile is vital. Counting the holes in the ceiling gets old real fast. Make someone take you for drives that don't end at a doctor's office.
swedishcelt 0 #12 February 22, 2006 Yeah. I did a lot of that stuff too. I called everyone I knew and whined. LOL- Remember when I called you?
L.O. 0 #13 February 22, 2006 Feb. 7, 1998. Because of equipment mal. I ended up hitting the ground a little harder then I intended. I pulverized my left femur (20 or so visible parts). broke my left knee cap in half. Broke the ball joint of my left femur in half. shattered my hip (7 visible fractures). Destroyed my splean. Burst my bladder(I had to pee I guess). Shattered my skull (6 visible fractures all emanating from the right eye socket). I was wearing a custom painted factory diver, smoked that. Tore the lining of the brain (dura layer). That shut me down for six f-n mos.. During that time I packed about 1000 sport rigs. I started training for my rigger rating. Spent so much time at the DZ it was crazy. learned to walk again bought a new GSXR 750 Yosh kit bike. bought a rig. My first jump back was at the World Freefall Convention. A 12 way with two vid. After opening my fury, I docked with another fury we did side by side and a down plane. Broke and flared. Of the 6 mos. off I only remember 3 so it wasn't bad at all. Since the accident I have made over 3000 skydives. gotten married bought a big house in the country. Had two awesome kids (boy and girl two years apart). As a result of that accident I lost 16 mos to the sport. I got a lot of really cool scars though, and a new perspective on life. spend more time with friends, do things you always wanted to. Take the time that you are given and make the most of it.HPDBs, I hate those guys. AFB, charter member.
Orange1 0 #14 February 23, 2006 wow... my little left fractured ankle and right tib/fib screws/plate thing seems really mild after that. (as an aside, all my whuffo friends were like "oh god you are so badly injured", all my skydiving friends were like "where are the x-rays?" then the talk turns to inuries like yours that make me feel like i did get off really lightly) i've been thinking about becoming a packer, or doing something else to stay around the DZ and keep in the loop. (when i can walk again, of course). but the 'new perspective on life' thing, even though my accident wasn't nearly as bad as yours, is true. for example: i will never, ever take my legs for granted again and instead of being the lazy sh!t i've been all my life, i will actually start really using them... when i can. i lie awake and think about my first recurrency jump every night before i go to sleep! don't think it will be anything as ambitious as yours though Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. hookitt 1 #17 February 23, 2006 QuoteCross train, improve what you have that still works....eat healthy/ heal faster That's a great Idea. I partially dislocated my ankle, spraining it really bad and breaking the fibula. I didn't have any metal put in me and it was only one leg. so I had it easy. It's so easy to do nothing and drink and eat a lot for something to do... so try not to... at least for too long Well what can you do? Hell, you broke both legs? Hmmmm..... If you don't already have one, get a sports doctor to prescribe some rehab when the time comes. You said you really want to start using them when you can walk.... do what you can with what you got. Devise a way to do pull ups. Do sit ups. Do anything you can. If you get to use crutches any times soon, crutch around a lot. Learn to walk and hop around on them ... well you did both legs in so perhaps that part will be tougher. Ask the doctor about a Bledsoe boot. I borrowed one that was adjustable back and forth. The range of motion and the angle was completely adjustable so when it came time to put weight on it, I junked the oversized piece of crap the doctor gave me. THIS is exactly the kind I borrowed. BLEDSOE ADJUSTABLE DORSI PLANTAR FLEXION WALKER BOOT. Damn.. I can't believe it sold for so cheap! Try not to be to sedate. Walking kicks ass and since you will be able to do it again, come back stronger. I hired a fitness trainer cuz I simply didn't know how to work out properly. If you get to see a physical therapist that's great but seriouly look into a sports doctor. Anyway, good luck. I'm glad you you'll be able to use your legs again. :) PS: Something like this may be needed down the road a bit.My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry...
