waltappel 1 #2 February 19, 2006 Quotei keep getting this message on my new laptop that says i need to clean my windows registry, is this a scam or legitimate?? Depends on what program is putting the message up. I would be very suspicious of that. I clean my registry regularly, but I have never had a program tell me I needed to. Scoop 0 #3 February 19, 2006 If its a little grey box from Windows Messenger its an advert, they give you web addresses to visit. Like registryclean.com or some shit like that. You can disable Messenger in control panel to prevent getting anymore. Gimme a sec and ill refresh my memory how. Its annoying, but it doesnt cause any harm. Just get it removed else you eventually end up hearing *ping* and a new box appears evey five seconds or so - took me ages to realise how to get rid of it. I thought was a virus at first. OK... click here for a step by step guide. http://www.lantalk.net/disable-messenger/

jheadley 0 #6 February 20, 2006 If you see a program on your desktop that says "Registry Cleaner", it's spyware. Get legitimate spyware removal programs from download.com called Spybot - Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware. It's funny, there are actually anti-spyware programs that are more annoying than the spyware itself. There was an anti-spyware program on the bar computer at Z hills that changed the web broswer home page to say "WARNING, your computer is under control from a remote source, run this program to get rid of spyware." Then when you try to run the program, it is a legitimate spyware removal program, but you have to pay for it!. Then when you try to uninstall it, it appears to be removed from your computer then it pops back up on your desktop a couple seconds later. I researched the program and was able to get rid of it by running a script in safe mode, but I just thought it was funny that the anti-spyware stuff uses the exact same tactics as the spyware.
