charmsdroppop 0 #1 February 7, 2006 I'm just wondering how one decides which one to go to opposed to the other. One can write a prescription and the other can't. The one that can usually doesn't listen very well cuz' a "script" is thier solution. A psychologist may listen better but doesn't solve much. Does that make sense? I must be thinking too much.......it's all crazy!is it dark yet
windcatcher 0 #2 February 7, 2006 I would suggest a psychologist, unless there are mental health issues involved. I think. I should know Mother to the cutest little thing in the world...
charmsdroppop 0 #3 February 7, 2006 Hmm, wouldn't there be mental health issues involved to begin with somehow? I think..is it dark yet
happythoughts 0 #4 February 7, 2006 A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with a Federal drug license. His time is more expensive than a psychologist. Therapy and medication work together. The purpose of medication is to keep the person in a stable place while the therapy works to address the issues. Many times, a person will see a psychiatrist infrequently to adjust medication and see a psychologist regularly for therapy.

I was seeing a psychologist, and she referred me to a psychiatrist. I saw him for meds, and her for working through issues. I saw him once a month, and her weekly. Now, I see my regular MD for the medication, because I've been stable for so very long, and can manage my illness appropriately as long as the meds continue. it took years to get there, so don't expect that right away...but that is where I've come to. I would suggest that you see a psychologist first, and let them make a referral to a psychiatrist should your illness warrant medications. Lots of time, meds are not needed, but talk therapy is. Good luck...and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to pm me. lawrocket 3 #11 February 7, 2006 I like psychiatrists. They can do more, and they have the ability to figure out whether the behavior is due to a mental imbalance or due to a thyroid problem. Seriously. My wife is hotter than your wife.
charmsdroppop 0 #12 February 7, 2006 Well thank you so kindly. I pretty much figured that's how it works. It's just that in my line of work I see alot of misdiagnosed people either going to only one or the other mostly due to insurance reasons and lack of self gaurdianship. The mental health system is fucked up as is and I guess that's a whole other topic that could be debated forever. I don't care for politics but unfortunately it's a huge part of it. It seems to me that it would be alot easier if a psychologist could do prescriptions considering they define a persons' diagnosis anyway instead having someone run around that is unstable as is. Alot of people get stuck in that inbetween phase or never make it thru thier recommended care..........it's in the streets everywhere and I'm rambling. Later.....is it dark yet
PLFXpert 0 #13 February 7, 2006 Then if you agree that at times drugs are needed for mental issues, you should go with having the option to prescribe.Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
jkbernstein 1 #14 February 7, 2006 This is true, especially in these days of managed health care, but many psychiatrists do therapy, as well. There are some kinds of psychotherapy which are ONLY done by psychiatrists. Which you choose has more to do with personal preference - whom do you connect with better - and which your insurance will pay for. I speak from experience on this one, by the way. My dad's a psychiatrist and my mom's a psychologist. Is it really any wonder I jump out of airplanes?
seejanefall 0 #15 February 7, 2006 Either one is fine, don't forget there is also the Licensed Social Worker. As a former Psych major, I would say the most important thing is finding someone you trust to talk to. Shop around. If the matching happens, it really doesn't matter the title. _____________ PMS #
Hipwrddude 0 #16 February 7, 2006 You're more likely to score with a psychologist. But you can score some from a psychiatrist. Hey, however you get some, go for it! You only live once, so go hell bent for leather with reckless abandon! And when you're satisfied, take a breath and get some more! Yee ha! ... what's this thread about again? Oh, sorry. You're always the starter in your own life!
