Going to Hawaii (Kauai)

Recommended Posts

ROAD TO HANA..............that is what that crazy little road was called. ROAD TO HANA!

I stayed at the Pioneer Inn in Lahiana while I was there and it was just the neatest little fishing village. Man - I'd love to go back

Dreams become reality, one choice at a time...

We rented a jeep for the drive to Hana! Top down, 4x4! Such beautiful scenery and that road is a twisty one.B|

After stopping at Hana (the 7 pools?) and the black sand beach, we continued driving around the entire backside of Maui (took us like 8 hours) but what fun.....!!

I've heard that the Polynesian Cultural Center is really cool . . . this from my friend whose husband is Hawaiian, and that's the first place his family wanted to take her when she visited the first time. I don't know which island it's on, though.

Hey girl!!

Kauai was almost 2 years ago, and my last "real" vacation... it was awesome. You will love it!

Kauai is very laid back. Not much of a party island, which is nice sometimes. We didn't do any of the Luau's because the locals said they were not much compared to the Luau's on the big island. We did just about everything else there was to do on the island. Helicopter tour of the Na Pali Coast, Zodiac raft tour of the Na Pali Coast. Definitley do this. And dont take the catamaran, take the Zodiac. www.napali-explorer.com is the company I used and they were awesome. That was my favorite part of the trip.

Other than that.. beaches, shopping in Hanalei Bay.. Waimea canoyon, waterfalls, hiking, etc. Its a pretty small island so its easy to find things to do. We took the helicopter tour of the island on the first day there, so we could see the whole island and knew where we wanted to go. I spent a lot of time on the beaches.

It rains a lot on the east side of the island. If you can stay on the west side, you might enjoy that more.

Theres a really good restaurant called Duke's Canoe Club. I think its in the Hilton or the Marriott resort but it was fabulous. Great view and good food.

If I think of anything else I'll PM you. I think there are a few pictures in my personal gallery as well.

I already figured that the luau in Kauai would not be that cool, based upon websites for a couple different places.

I am staying at the Outrigger Lae Nani, which is at the Southeast corner or the island. Hopefully it doesnt rain too much!

So you do recommend the helicopter tour?? For the amount of $$, I was not sure if it it would be worth it or not.

I am so excited! We both graduate about a week before the trip, so it is a timely celebration!

The heli takes you to the center of the island where all of the mountains and canyons are. Its totally worth it.

70% of the island is inaccessible except by helo. The roads all go around the outside and stop on the Na Pali coast. The only way to see the inside of the island is to fly.

Personal opinions to follow:

Best beaches on the north shore - Ke'e and Tunnels beaches on the north shore, at the end of the road.

Serious hiker - get a permit to walk the Kalalau Trail. Plan on about 8 hours one way. Short walk is on the Kalalau trail to Hanakapiai Beach. No permit needed and it will take a couple of hours in and out. Hanakapiai Falls is in the back of the valley if motivated. Add a couple of hours to see that.

If you go to Ke'e, stop at the scenic overlook just passed Princeville (on the left) and you can see Namolokama Waterfalls, tallest on the island (3000'). Namolokama either means water from the sky, or big ass waterfalls, I forget which.

In Hanalei, excellent sushi and music at Sushi Blue. Nice people, too.

Up near Ke'e and Tunnels is an area known as Haena, also called little Hollywood. Homes owned by Craig T. Nelson, Pierce Brosnan, Sly Stallone, Michael Crichton there. Also on Kauai, the Bridges' brothers, Ben Stiller, and Bette Midler.

They do tandems at Port Allen, but will not let anyone else jump there. Talked to the guy when he was on Oahu. Didn't appear he would budge on that.

Starting this week I will be flying tours on Kauai two out of every four Thursdays. The rest of the time I will be flying on Oahu. If you need any other info, let me know.
Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.

I cannot believe that big cave you hiked through! Defintely not for me- I would have been scared to death not being able to see whats on the other side (for a mile) and having water up to my waist for most of the caving experience!!

I want to do just everything- we are going to be lucky because we will have bdays and graduation and everything right before to warrant a gift. Mike and I are both asking for reservations to the following as our gifts:
(we just ordered Kauai revealed, so hopefully that will tell us the good companies to use, but please throw out recommendations or things to add to the list!)

- Rent a kayak at Fern Grotto
- Helicopter tour
- Tour of Kauai coffee (I am such a coffee fanatic)
- Waimea Canyon
- Whale watching and snorkeling trips
- Sunset cruise/dinner on the Napali Coast
- Hiking the Kalalua Trail (I hear it is really wet and rough, so I just got new Keens- wanted them for jumping anyhow)
- Trips to hidden waterfalls and good sushi!

I am so stoked and still have 2 months!! (to get in shape at least!)

Anymore suggestions are more than welcome!
Blue skies and SAFE landings!
