I just don't understand people sometimes.

Recommended Posts

I work with a guy who is probably a good 30 pounds overweight, doesn't do jack-squat for exercise, eats garbage for lunch, and smokes about a pack a day. He is constantly coughing and you can hear the wheezing in his breath all the time. If he does something as little as walk up the stairs, he gets red in the face and out of breath.

I come in to the office yesterday, and he is drinking a protein supplement drink!:S And to top it off, he starts telling me why I should be drinking them too to be healthy. Now, I am not overweight, I am a runner, I lift weights to keep muscle-tone, my cholesterol is good, my blood pressure is good, my resting heart rate is about 48 bpm, I don't smoke, and I am pretty good about watching what I eat. Yet this guy is telling ME how to be healthy???

Seriously folks, it's not rocket science!

Actually, if you look at it from his point of view, he's probably just saying that because he's proud of himself for doing something - anything - even remotely healthy.

I can't imagine him being ignorant of his condition. He's probably quite self-conscious and caught in a trap of unhealthy behavior that feeds on itself.

Maybe talk to him about the protein shakes and see where it goes. Who knows? With enough encouragement, he might start taking further steps to being healthy...

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

OMG!!!!!!!! This sounds EXACTLY like my old coworker...except he was about 70 pounds overweight. It is SOOO frustrating to see some guy eat a pizza everyday for lunch, not workout (because it's bad for your knees...as if being overweight is good for them), and then hear them dispense advice...especially when you try to eat right and exercise and are in shape.

UGH! I know exactly what you're talking about, and it made me want to go insane.

Actually, I believe you are totally wrong. I HAVE talked to him, and he really does think drinking a protein drink will somehow make him healthy.

If someone will take the time to drink a protein supplement, yet smoke a pack a day and do nothing for exercise, then I am sorry, they ARE ignorant.

Well then, I stand firmly corrected, and in awe of the level of ignorance it would take to think you can smoke cigarettes AND be healthy. Doesn't compute. :S:S

AHHH! The similarities are uncanny. He would wash down his daily pizza with a "very vanilla soy" drink. Yes, soy is good for you, but when you have a huge pizza and soy milk that has tons of sugar, maybe it's time to look at adjusting eating habits...not simply adding things to an already poor diet and thinking that's going to make a difference.

It was even more frustrating when he would give incorrect advice: "You have to workout for at least 45 mins a day to lose any weight at all." :S (Well, I guess if you're eating a pizza a day, you do need to workout for 45 mins a day.)

I hear ya!

I stayed with a married couple, who are good friends of mine, one time the night before a 15k I was running in. They are both overweight and don't exercise. I got up the morning of raceday, and they asked me what I wanted to eat before we headed out. I said either a small bowl of cereal or a bagel would be great. Their reply?

"Oh, we don't have cereal or bagels in the house because it isn't healthy to eat things like that loaded with carbs.":S

I'm one to think pot is healthy and running is dangerous. Don't get me started. But yes, eating healthy and exercise is very important. To be happy is more important than to be healthy. But being healthy can improve happiness.

I think that what we are dealing with here is a case of misinformation. I went to school with a guy that thought just simply by taking Creatine and Protein and not working out he was going to become the terminator. It didn't happen and he became fat with really bad gas. YUCK...

2 friends of mine are diligently working out and have been for the past few months. It's made a HUGE difference. One is using a personal fitness trainer and has made great progress but often comments on how she is stuck at her current weight and can't seem to lose it.

After looking at the ice cream, cookie dough, pasta with ragu spaghettil sauce, salami, etc... in the fridge I began to understand. I did some extensive research and found out it was not a healthy diet. I was shocked!!!

The weight loss pills haven't done much but boy do they make her "active" for a about an hour.

I just gave her husband a nice list and eating suggestions that were given to me a couple years ago by this psycho fitness trainer. We'll see how that goes in the next couple months.

The trainer was damn good but has a screw loose. His fitness training is incredible and and nutritional suggestions were spot on His attitude was a bit "black helicopters are circling" if you know what I mean.

Anyway, you can work out all you want but Taco Bell and chocolate chip cookie dough won't do the trick, even if you eat a good organic spring mix salad along side.
My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto

I know someone that thinks fruit roll-ups are healthy because of the fruit.

:o
I suppose now you are going to tell me there is no Santa Claus

Cereal or bagels in the house because it isn't healthy to eat things like that loaded with carbs.

To be honest with you Bagels are not good for you. They are the equivalent of eating like 5 slices of bread. A peice of a Toast and an Egg would be much much better.

Also...if you are not active and don't workout why would you want a Carb heavy diet?

Dude, you should really think before you post. I was headed out to run a 15k race, so a bagel is perfect for carbs and energy. Plus, there is ALOT more to whether something is good for you other than carbs. And duh, about the "carb heavy diet" thing. My point is you should be more concerned about exercising rather than carbs. Like I said, it's not rocket science. If you exercise and watch what you eat, it is really not that difficult.

The point about my friends:

They are overweight and in poor shape, but don't exercise or eat carbs. I am not overweight and am in good shape, but I eat plenty of carbs and exercise. You tell ME which one works.

my blood pressure is good, my resting heart rate is about 48 bpm

is 60bpm bad resting heart rate?

No, that is not too bad. It is pretty average for people who don't smoke and are not too overweight, but probably don't do much cardio exercise.

I was part of a Running Clinic that trained us towards running races and at no point did they every recommend eating a Bagel. *shrug* Maybe you can "advise" them of the correct things to eat so they can properly advise us.

60 isn't bad at all... I'm not at all overweight and I do plenty of cardio exercise, and my resting heart rate is 60.
