ExAFO 0 #1 January 15, 2006 I interviewed with an Insurance agency on Thursday for a claims adjuster position. I think it went pretty good: Pro: -Interviewer's Dad is ex-USAF, I'm ex-USAF-->rapport -I used skydiving and civil aviation as metaphors for meeting challenges and conquering fears--she seemed impressed (again, dad is CFI and former USAF special ops) -I was able to spin my civil defense exercise experience into a liking for chaos/problem response (this job starts when car wrecks end) -I have an MBA, which put me up a few points -I overnighted the thank-you letter immediately upon getting back home. Con: -I left 60 min early to get there (30 min trip. However, a semi truck accident made me ~7 min late. I did however, call 15 min before appt to let her know I'd be a bit tardy. She responded with a chuckle and a "Welcome back to Chicago." I apologized again upon arrival, and the rest of the interview went well. When should I call, or should I wait for her to call me? She mentioned two other interviews before decsion time (that thurs and Friday). ThxIllinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.

Thx Wait 2-3 days after the interview before calling, shows them you're interested in the position but not desperate for a job. I'd definitely call them first though....The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

Elisha 1 #6 January 16, 2006 I would wait at least a week if they didn't already specifically say when you should expect to hear from them. Anything sooner will sound desparate. Just because you are anxious doesn't mean they don't have other things to do. Actually adjusting claims and resolving them takes priority over hiring people, even though it will help long term to get another person in the door. nathaniel 0 #7 January 16, 2006 Unfortunately there are no hard and fast rules about timing for followup. When I got my current job, it went like this: December: Submitted resume January: 1x interview (phone) February: 2x interview (phone) March: Radio silence Late April: Surprise telephone call, "still interested?" followed by an in-person interview and then an offer. We've hired since then, and I've gotten to see the internals with HR reps & staff juggling all kinds of other things ... sometimes there's just a delay of a week or so for the wheels of the system to churn. The rest of the HR department seems to function pretty smoothly...for some reason hiring is just a pain.My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
nessvegas 0 #8 January 16, 2006 I have been a part of many interviews, and I highly suggest the follow-up letter but not the phone call (unless you asked for permission to follow-up with a call). I do not expect or even want one from a candidate. I do like the letter or even an email. Be sure to personalize it to your interview. I got one once that was so obviously a formed response the candidate chances were lowered. Wishing I was in the air instead of in Michigan!
