PLFXpert 0 #27 January 10, 2006 I'm biased. I LOVE standard. I own both, b/c I have a need for a larger vehicle and rarely do they come (or would you want one) in standard. I will say this---I've never gotten a speeding ticket on the automatic I'm sure you'll be fine No need to be intimidated. It's like riding a bike, and once you learn you'll be able to drive anything on the road.Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
PLFXpert 0 #28 January 10, 2006 QuoteDude, I can change my PANTS while driving a stick shift. You, too? I do this every other month on my way to our sales meeting---it's a 5-hour drive one way---and I prefer going the distance in my PJsPaint me in a corner, but my color comes back. skycat 0 #29 January 10, 2006 I love a standard because of the control of when the shift happens, my Mazda drives me nuts because it shifts for fuel economy not performance. Luckily it does have a semi-manual (able to use all 5 gears) that I can switch it into that will let me control when to shift but much easier since it doesn't have a clutch like the standards. This is a life saver in the mountains when the car wants to keep going into 5th and you know you are only on the flat spot for a second before starting the next climb.Fly it like you stole it! NlghtJumper 0 #30 January 10, 2006 Have any of you gotten the new "paddle-shifting" cars? From what I gather of them, they are manual shift without the clutch. To me, that just doesn't seem like as much fun. Granted the "two hands on the wheel is better" approach, but are these systems really better than a regular 5-speed? Scoop 0 #31 January 10, 2006 I only drive manuals, Ive driven lots of automatics and they are poo IMHO. Randomly changing gear mid corner just because ive booted it and anyway you cant heel & toe in an automatic. That sounds the bollocks when you do it properly and its very smooth too. Driving is fun! Ever wondered why they dont race automatics

BillyVance 34 #33 January 10, 2006 At one time, my wife and I had all three main types of transmission equipped vehicles. Manual, Automatic, and Sequential. I have found myself reaching in the wrong place a few times and the shifter wasn't there. I like them all. It just depends on what you use them for. The Toyota Tundra pickup is automatic. No surprise there, it's a full-size truck. The compact Mazda Protege is manual. It just feels right with that car and I get to control the shifting. It's small and light. The Toyota MR2 Spyder that we had until last September was a sequential. It's this little sports car convertible with racing grade pedals. Very very fast little car. Sequential works great for this car. You can accelerate a bit more quickly tapping the gear shift through the 6 gears available and not have a clutch to worry about. This is what the Indy racers have, if I'm not mistaken. We have a family car now, a Pontiac Vibe. I can't accelerate worth a shit with it, but it's just as well with a baby coming in less than 3 months. I also needed to stop getting speeding tickets. twofast 0 #34 January 10, 2006 how about an automatic with a manual valve body (and a transbrake)? it's like driving a standard without the clutch. QuoteEver wondered why they dont race automatics well, for drag racing, most race autos because they're faster and most consistant (until you get in the 7 sec and faster range). that being said, i miss driving a stick shift. Scoop 0 #35 January 10, 2006 I drove a Toyota Yaris and a Porsche Boxster, both with this sequential gear change thingy. It may have improved since couple of years ago but you could make a cup of tea in the time it takes from pressing the lever to the engine actually changin gear. I was severly over revving it for a while... but shhhh, dont tell the owners

Could have gone faster but was approaching a bend and did the prudent thing. I slowed down. Turned the bend, and got popped by a cop at 91 mph... fuck... Scoop 0 #37 January 10, 2006 Haha. Bad luck! I put a new wing on and had to test the POrsche for wind noise so took it down the bypass. Tried to change when I thought was right and it just carried on, revved the tits off of it. I though I mustnt have been firm enough so I pressed the lever again only for it to chnage up 2 gears! Piece of shit! Probably takes some getting used to
cocheese 0 #38 January 10, 2006 Poor Windcatcher . All she is learning is that we would rather drive a stick than an automatic to roll joints while we drive. But my favorite in a stick is : Rolling a joint while tuning the radio, going up hill, making a left turn, at a yellow light while eating a chili dog, talking on the phone and getting road-head all at the same time. Sucks when it's dark and raining out too but we must get er done before we pull into the dz so the beer doesn't get warm or we're in trouble.
