Looking at the time clock as the vid runs,,
about 16 secs before the first guy dumps,,,
another 2 secs for the 2nd...
If my math is close,, and just for a belly flyer fall rate,, #1 dude opens ~1500 ft,,, # 2 maybe 300-400 ft lower right?? Maybe a lil lower with a FF rate...
I pscho pack my triathalon,, Ida been hittin the ground at line stretch if I was lucky... Geezus!
Glad they were ok, an figure posting it is a heads up to others to think twice about this type of jump, have a dive plan and stick with it...

I personally think what they did was totally justified. They were stuck with a low cloud cover and they live in an area with chronically shitty weather. They were sick and tired of playing by everybody’s rules and BSR’s. Why is it so bad when people decide to take matters into their own hands? They took a chance and came out on top. Good for them. That guy was way too apologetic on camera. He did not owe anyone an excuse. Keep the good footage coming guys! YOU ROCK!!

I thought this video was cool. No way this was posted as a lesson for other skydivers because the first thing I thought when hearing the rockmusic and seeing the ground rushing up to them was "I'll need to try that one day". It certainly looks like fun.

Meanwhile the people going "YOUSHOULDHAVEGONEINBECAUSEYOUAREMAKINGUSLOOKBADIFYOUHADDIEDIWOULDHAVELAFFEDYOUWOULDHAVEGOTTENWHATYOUDESERVEDSCUMBAG" are being pathetic. Some people think the same way about all skydivers and BASEjumpers...

well, if you DO try it one day, I hope you're as luck as the filmer was :S

I don't.
There's a big difference between (1) making mistakes in the learning process, like we all do and always will, and (2) being a dumb shit.

I save my hope and good wishes for the people to which (1) applies.
Those in (2) should just go away, disappear silently, one way or the other, I don't care.

I know this is the common thought process among some people in the BASE community (fuck the rules, fuck everyone else, I'm going to do what I want to do when I want to do it, just because I can). But what happens when John Doe shows up at your favorite object, ignores all common sense as well as ignores the local's beta on how the jump should be made. Then John Doe goes in (removing himself from the gene pool which isn't the worst thing to happen), but in the process thanks to John Doe's actions, your favorite site is now hotter than hell and access to it has been permanently shut down.

This incident is no different. Some people put fun ahead of common sense and safety. Access to the skies as well as access to fix objects depends on the actions of all of us. The best BASE jumpers are the kind who follow good BASE ethics, do the jump within the parameters of how the jump should be safely conducted and be as stealthy as possible. The best skydives are when people go out and have fun, but don't put fun ahead of safety which could jeapardize access to jumping for everyone in the present as well as in the future.

Hopefully these guys learned from their mistakes (we all make them). But to put fun ahead of safety is not very smart and is just asking for trouble down the road. If someone wants some ground rush, take up BASE or better yet bungie jumping. Skydiving is not the place to be pushing the limits of how low can I get away with pulling only because there's a cloud layer at 3k. I don't want to judge the people in this video (we all make mistakes), but having done a lot of hop n' pops in the last couple of years, I kept watching it asking "when are they going to pull"?

Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

I totally agree with you. All of you guys bitching about this is going to do what? People make choices all the time so good some not so good. I know both of these guys and I will bet u they wont be doing that again.(well not as low any way) I think the fact that they posted this is a great learning video and fun to watch. I SAY FUCK THE RULES.B|

>Base gear is completely different and is specifically made and
>packed to open quicker than a typical sport parachute system.

Not when I started! All we had were larger PC's (although velcro-closed rigs were just starting to make an appearance.) Of course, the skydiving gear of that era opened about as fast as BASE canopies do today.

SOUNDS GOOD TO ME;)

Rules were made to be broken. So I gues you are so perfect you have never done anything agaist the rules. I really dont think thier are many skydivers that haven't gone low at some point in thier skydiving life. I have and learned alot from it. I personally dont like rules and regulations. You pay your money and sign your waver. If you die its on you and the choice you made. Life is about choices right or wrong who am i to judge, or you for that matter.

Rules are there not to restrict you but to protect you and others in the sky with you. Your thinking might be fine if you're a one-person dropzone and there are no people on the ground that you'll land on. But since you're not a one-man dropzone, your willingness NOT to follow the rules puts other people, both jumpers and non-jumpers, at risk.

Next time you're psyched up to break a rule, think about whether you can live with having taken out another jumper or the bad publicity your dropzone is going to get as a result of your decision. You might realize that your thinking is a bit selfish.

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

I have been in this sport over 10 years. If you chose to pull low and have the gear to do it it does not endanger anyone but you. You explain to me how it affects anyone but me if I pull low in my own airspace. I have never even come close to hurting anyone or myself. But you are right if you pull at 600 ft you could hurt someone but its not likely. I personally open above 2500 feet but only because my canopy takes 800 feet to open. I still dont like rulz. pay your money take your chances.

Nice attitude. Again, I hope I'm not around when you break a rule that breaks you back. It won't be pretty.

And this isn't about me being perfect. I'm at least mature enough to understand the rationale behind the rules. That's more than can be said for some others here. I respect the collective wisdom of those that came before me and created the rules. I freely acknowledge that I'm just one person who has a lot to learn from those who are older, wiser, and more experienced than I am.

rules can be broken safley if you dont like my attitude WHO CARES I DONT.

BLUE SKYS

We'll see how your attitude is when you get bounced from dz's for being reckless, or when you break your body from "safley (sic)" breaking a rule.

You're attitude would be laughable if it weren't so sad [:/]

It's reminiscent of a rebellious teenager.

if this had been posted as a story on 'Scary Stories from the old days' then we would all have lapped it up.

There is a time and a place for these activities - I say: good on them for having big balls not dying. Bad on them for risking their DZ and others.

so thats what i mean, the USPA seems to be only a "suggestive" governing entity. dont get me wrong, i like the USPA, and follow the guidelines. so, even though we all think this is wrong, besides running the risk of landing on someones house, can we really accuse him of doing anything wrong...i mean, if there are no real rules that mean anything and no real recourse.

Just an FYI - the USPA isn't just "suggestive" in the state of Nevada. See here.
