FFlyer 0 #1 December 27, 2005 Ive searched through many threads about how to travel with your rig. Almost everybody sais that you should carry it on with you. Well ive checked a few airlines and they all seem to have a carry on weight limit of about 7kg. (South African Airways for example). Well my rig weighs about 10.5kg. There is no way its going to pass for 7. So are most of the other airlines in other countries different to those here? Do you arrange ahead of time for a sporting allowance of some sort? Judging by the threads ive read it seems everyone has super light 7kg rigs...
FlyingTed 0 #2 December 27, 2005 Just take it with you, I don`t think you`ll get in trouble. I had my rig plus my normal backpack with me - that`s not allowed, too. Nobody will weigh your luggage, so it shouldn`t be a problem at all. Kat #1094
SkydiveStMarys 0 #3 December 27, 2005 They may charge you extra for every lb its over, so you may still be able to carry it on, but pay any extra service charge. BobbiA miracle is not defined by an event. A miracle is defined by gratitude.
funks 1 #4 December 27, 2005 Just say the following in a very firm voice "It's ok, I'm a professional, everything is under control" For effect, flash your passport as you are saying this. If they still give you grief, point at your hackey and say "Dont make me use this" They will have no idea what purpose the hackey serves and will most likely slowly back away from you, at that point just run onto the plane rig and all. Problem solved.

A 150 rig is not going to look much bigger than a normal backpack so I doubt anyone is going to stop you and force your rig onto the scales.Do you want to have an ideagasm? Lindercles 0 #7 December 27, 2005 if it's that heavy, will it fit through the scanner? All the scanners i've seen have a hole the size of the under seat storage for you to put your carry on through. I've had to squash my stuff to fit through it before, and i've often wondered if my rig would fit.
NWFlyer 2 #8 December 28, 2005 Your rig is much smaller than mine and I've never had any trouble carrying it on. Then again, I've never heard of an airline having a weight limit for carryon bags (at least not in the U.S.). Mine, though large, will fit in a standard sized rollaboard bag."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. McDuck 0 #9 December 28, 2005 I've yet to fly with my rig on anything other than domestic flights, but I've never had my carry-ons weighed. The bag I had my rig and helmet in was ridiculously large for a carry-on, and the only incident I encountered was here in NC when a security guard made me fit it into that metal mock-up for carry-on sizing. After five minutes of wrangling it into that space, she laughed and said that as long as I could make it fit, she'd let it up the stairs. Broke 0 #10 December 28, 2005 You should see the size and weights of my carry on bags. I can back a whole lot of crap in my duffel that fits nicely in the overhead compartment, I guess if I had to I could put it in front of me. I don't really think they actually check the weight, but then again different dtroked for different folks. I guess they figure if you haven't gotten a hernia by lifting your bag it is good to go.Divot your source for all things Hillbilly. dbattman 0 #11 December 28, 2005 You could detach and check the main with your other luggage. That will save you about 3-4 kg. The big problems we've had with checked rigs have been from nosy security people that want to open the reserve. One fellow had bolt cutters taken to his reserve pin, and another had his reserve torn full of holes from someone shoving a probe down into his container. But I think others are right- unless they actively weight carryons and you have it looking like a backpack (like shoving it into a large school backpack) you will probably be fine. FFlyer 0 #12 December 28, 2005 Ok, well I think im going to contact the airline and get a price for how much per extra kg ill have to pay for carryon which is over 7kg. Just to get a figure. Then ill just try and carryon my rig anyway but at least if they stop me then I can pay the extra amount if its not too much.
GravityGirl 0 #13 December 28, 2005 At what airports did this happen? How long ago? I travel with gear A LOT. I check it. Would be good to know which airports could be problematic. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear!
piisfish 140 #14 December 28, 2005 it depends what flight you'll be taking. When I flew from JNB to Pietermaritzburg for last years Easter Boogie, the plane was SO small I had to hand it to put it in the hold because it would fit nowhere in the cabin. That was no big deal, as I was there when they stored it and it was the first piece of luggage out. take it as a cabin luggage, if it doesn't fit in the overhead compartments they will put it in hold for you.scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM
Andrelr 0 #15 December 29, 2005 1. Get Manny to make you up one of his rig carry-on bags. It'll fit the allowable dimension template. 2. Carry it as if it's light. 3. You generally only sometimes get hassled as it goes through the scanner. Bullshit and perseverence helps here.
