Home for the Holidays... what's your take?

Recommended Posts

A recent PM exchange got me to wondering ... am I the only one who actually enjoys "relative work" (the other kind, not the belly-flying kind:P)? I live all the way across the country from my family, but I've always enjoyed time with them and I look forward to seeing them around the holidays.

I love them dearly and it is always fulfilling and wonderful. It is an 8 hour drive though because the surrounding airports are commuter and very expensive and so it's more economical to drive and I am always alone. It makes me just too exhausted for too much enjoyment. [:/] I often have to turn around and drive right back. Makes it stressful.

I can't remember a holiday where my family had any issues going on. It's always fun and relaxed. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones. :)

I love my family. Who couldn't love drinking too much wine, eating too much fancy food, playing cards, and watching football. :)

We don't usually do the fancy food, but it's yummy nonetheless. No cards, but dad and I have a standing Scrabble tournament every year. And I am slipping a couple bottles of red wine in my bag to split with my mom - she almost never drinks it at home because dad's allergies act up when he drinks red and she doesn't like to open a whole bottle for herself.

I love my family dearly and would do anything to help them.... but because of this flaw in my personality, I have to live >500 miles away. I grew up giving my baby sister a bit too much support and she now needs to learn self confidence and independence. Unfortunately it took her marrying someone to "take care of her" to make me realize that she smart enough and strong enough and needs to be able to trust herself to live her life. My older sister just has lots of drama.
It helps to be physically distant when it's hard to be emotionally distant. :S

I'll take time off from the dz to spend time with my sisters and nieces and nephews any time. I don't get to see them nearly often enough, and rarely around the holidays anymore. The "kids" are almost all adults now (funny because I swear I'm not any older......) and we're scattered across the country.

I am home this year... The Fam is from Ohio... but last year (when I was away from Ohio) I didn't go home and for me being around my family can be a little stressful.

2 years ago I flew home for a week and I didn't enjoy myself... I felt like I was back in HS... ever time I wanted to go out I had to ask to borrow a car... etc... [:/]

My maternal grandmother always had either a "big" Thanksgiving or Christmas. My Mom was one of seven so when I say big...sometimes there was 50 people there.

But sadly, my grandmother who I really thought would live forever passed away in February of 2004
:( My mom has been gone since 92 and my dad who lives 12 miles from me hasn't been to my house in a year (he's always been that way). Sadly, I can already see those connections fading, not just for the holidays.

My job requires holiday work so....I was tagged for Christmas this year. Not so bad now that the kids are grown and have their own families/relationships. My sister's B-day is X-mas eve, she and I always get together. So...I guess my answer of other is correct.

Yes you are, any time there's a family function (with my family anyway) there's always someone starting some sort of drama. Only reason I show up at Christmas is because I'm expected to be there. Wasn't always like that.... miss the 'good old days'... lol

If my parents lived in Eloy, I'd be home for xmas, thanksgiving, easter and flag day every year.

Count your blessings and enjoy them for as long as you can, they grow up way too fast, or so I've been told (what can I say, not all of us were fortunate enough to have kids)...

Sadly, I can already see those connections fading, not just for the holidays.

My dad is one of seven, and when his mother passed away, his oldest sister took on the "matriarch" role and she takes that very seriously, from trying to bring everyone together at the holidays (or a few weeks before) to being the center for all information (gossip;)) in the family. I had lunch with her daughter when she was in Seattle a couple months ago and I let slip some information about my brother that she didn't know. Her first response? "Does my mother know?" If that aunt of mine doesn't know, it's not known.

Though I don't get back for stuff with that side of the family very often,I'm glad she's taken on that roll in the family.

That's sweet.

I replied one, but really between 1 and 2. My "real" family (I have 3 moms and 2 dads - its a story), but my Dad and stepmom are boring - they just don't do anything! They never do any activities with me/brothers or go anywhere for vacation. Even though I was going crazy and needed to get out of the house 10 years ago, I enjoy visiting everyone. My parents still live where I grew up and even if my stepbros are not around, I can usually find friends from church that I know or grew up with to do stuff with. I still love them and want to visit them though.

This Christmas I'm having my folks at my house and for dinner, add my fellow deaf skydiver friend whose nearest family is 1000 miles away. 5 people for dinner is plenty, nice and quiet and simple games...

Billy, are the holidays ever actually LOUD for you? ;)

I did forget the one thing I don't like about visiting my parents... dialup! But, Dad said that DSL is really close in their area, so they may finally be able to join the high-speed world (I'd tried to get them to look at satellite internet, and they were finally investigating when they got this news).

But for now? DAMN this is slow!

In-laws? I'd rather step in front of a bus on a slick road. I get by with a few glasses of...something. :S
