Jumping a Wings at more than 254lbs?

Interested to see if you know of anyone jumping a current wings h/c (TSO-23D) that is above the 254lb exit weight limit.

It's not for me and I know it is not rated for over 254lbs...and even if someone were jumping one, it still wouldn't make it safe or legal. Just wondering.

Ok, if TSO-23d is the highest rating for most main stream h/c wings/javelin and they say it is only rated to 254lbs @ 150 kts then why would PD sell an Navigator 280 that has a max weight of 336lbs?

Even Intermediate says 300 lbs.

I doubt PD thinks these canopies are going to be going into special Vector or modified tandem containters.

Anyone have an opinion on this?

TSO-23d says nothing about a 254lb limit. It references SAE AS8015B which requires certification for a minium of 220lb at 150 KEAS for solo rigs, or 400lbs at 175 KEAS for tandem rigs. The mfgr can certify a harness or reserve for any weight/speed combination above that.

This is irrelevant for main canopies since they are not certificated.

The manufactures just need their asses covered. I would assume that aggiedave weighs a bit more than 254lbs and I think he jumps a wings. People will go over the 'max' on their parachutes to gain the better performance i.e. speed. Think of all the swoopers out their who are loading the canopies more than the manf. recommends.

The Javelin is now rated to 300 lbs and 180 kts. The Vector/Micron series doesn't have a TSO'd weight limit or speed.

The navigator is a main canopy and is not required to be TSO'd. You can out that canopy into a Vector/Micron (non-special, non-tandem) and have the system be perfectly legal to whatever weight you wanted to put under it.

To clarify what H&S is saying, my 2002 Vector3 is certified to TSO-c23b.
The attached chart is from the FAA's 2005 Parachute Rigger Handbook.

Hi ryoder,

That chart is simply wrong. There are no placard requirements, as to weight and/or strength, on any component TSO'd under C23b.

In fact, you do not have to placard/state/label or anything else ( except for the 'normal' marking req'ments ) when mfg under TSO C23b in the Standard category.

Placarding/labeling, with certain info, is req'd if under the Low Speed category in TSO C23b.

PS) Only TSO C23c has the upper weight limitations, TSO C23d has no maximum weight limitations. One could test and get the TSO approval for 10,000 lbs if one wanted to.
