airtwardo 7 #4 December 10, 2005 http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/news/state/13378416.htm Posted on Sat, Dec. 10, 2005 Comedian Richard Pryor dies at 65 Associated Press LOS ANGELES - Richard Pryor, the caustic yet perceptive actor-comedian who lived dangerously close to the edge both on stage and off, has died. He was 65. He died sometime late Friday or early Saturday of a heart attack at his home in the San Fernando Valley, according to his ex-wife Flyn Pryor. Pryor, whose audacious style influenced an array of stand-up artists, had been ill for years with multiple sclerosis, a degenerative disease of the nervous system. Regarded early in his career as one of the most foul-mouthed comics in the business, Pryor gained a wide following for his expletive-filled but universal and frequently personal insights into modern life and race relations. Among those most influenced by his comedy were fellow black artists such as Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall and Damoy Wayans, as well as Robin Williams, David Letterman and others. Pryor's pioneering success made their roads to stardom all the smoother. A series of hit comedies in the '70s and '80s, as well as filmed versions of his concert performances, helped make him one of the highest paid stars in Hollywood. He was one of the first black performers to have enough leverage to cut his own Hollywood deals. In 1983, he signed a $40 million, five-year contract with Columbia Pictures. Among his films: "Stir Crazy," "Silver Streak," "The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings," "Which Way Is Up?" and "Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip." ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

SkydiveStMarys 0 #8 December 10, 2005 Imagine this scenerio.... Babysitting as a 11 yr old and watching cable TV.......Flipped on HBO (we didn't have that at our house)Richard Pryor is the very first person that I heard saying such god awful cuss words....he changed my life, he opened my eyes to a whole different realm of possibilities. My eyes must have been the size of saucers after seeing his stand up routine on HBO. I was mesmerized by what he said and HOW he said it. Yes, he corrupted me. What a legend..... micro 0 #13 December 11, 2005 thx jim... it is indeed a horrible disease, one that is typically diagnosed in the 30's or so... MS sufferers typically live w/ progressive body function deterioration over years and years. It's truly awful. Pryor was courageous in his fight, as are so many others, like Montel and others... they deserve our prayers and support for sure. I miss Lee. And JP. And Chris. And... And History of the World, Part 1... RIP Richard... he was one of my all-time favorite comedians. I'll never forget the stand-up routine he did on Showtime some 20 or 25 years ago. BillyVance 34 #17 December 11, 2005 I was just reading the news article on him... The best part is this: Even in poor health, his comedy was vital. At a 1992 performance, he asked the room, "Is there a doctor in the audience?" All he got was nervous laughter. "No, I'm serious. I want to know if there's a doctor here." A hand finally went up. "Doctor," Pryor said, "I need to know one thing. What the fuck is MS?" Also, the article states that he grew up in his grandmother's brothel!! That motherfucking lucky sonofabitch... or was he? It was in Peoria, Il. and by brothel, they mean a 2bdrm. apt with working girls taking up most of the living space. Talent like his transcends even those upbringings... RastaRicanAir 0 #20 December 13, 2005 Fuck! Sunday?! And I just hear about this now? No wonder I've been in a mysteriously foul mood the past two days. Lost: Another irreplaceable influence, and the stuff of some great lifelong memories. My Dad used to listen to Pryor records for hours when I was a kid, and pretend he didn't notice me listening in. Letting me recite Mudbone bits from memory for my aunts and uncles when I was 8 years old was not only poor child rearing by today's Dr. Phil standards, it's the reason I'm the foul mouthed attention junkie, and wannabe entertainer that I am today. And I thank Richard for that, (and for teaching me to cuss properly) even if my friends and family don't. The man made stand up comedy the art that it can and should be, using more of its most vital elements (Truth, Anger, Honesty and Pain) than anybody. Like Robin Williams said: "Richard onstage was like watching Coltrane." And F*CK all those shitty movies he made to put his daughter through dance class! This motherf*cker co-wrote Blazing Saddles. STILL the funniest sh*t ever caught on film! R.I.P.
