Sorry about that Tdog.

Emergency vehicles are responding to reports of an aircraft skidding off the runway at Midway Airport Thursday evening.

Police and fire communications are indicating that the plane may be a 737 and that a portion of the aircraft may be on fire.

The plane is reported to have gone through fences surrounding the airport and came to rest on Central Avenue at 55th Street.

Ambulances are on the scene.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 with 98 people on board slid off a runway at Chicago's Midway Airport after landing in a snowstorm on Thursday, crashed through a fence and ended up across a road, CNN reported.

There were no immediate reports of injuries on the plane, which had flown from Baltimore. One person was initially reported as injured in a car that collided with the plane. The plane's nose was resting on the ground.

Ambulances and fire trucks rushed to the scene, in the northwest corner of the airport, which is surrounded by roads and a residential area.

Television footage showed the plane intact.

The only injuries being reported are 4 (critical/serious)) in a car which was trapped under the wing of the plane. There was another car which either was hit by or who hit the plane but there are no injuries reported there. It looks like the nose gear collapsed, likely during the breach of the fencing.

Weather at the time was heavy snow and some wind. The longest runway at Midway is 6,500 feet, which doesn't allow for much room for errors. There is speculation that there may have been ice on the runway, thus preventing traction of the plane's landing gear. Further indication is that there was extremely low visibility. There was a small (very limited) spill of fuel, but no homes nor businesses are being evactuated (Midway is located in a neigborhood rather than on the periphery of a city).

Planes are being diverted to O'Hare, with delays now upwards of 6-7 hours.

And that's about all I know.

News report was updated. 1 fatality. A child on the ground.

It was insane around here last night. 10pm and traffic in the city was like the middle of rush hour. I left work at 9pm and it still took me over 2 hours to get home. Due to a busy work day I had no idea what happened in my area until I got the radio on. Trying to get into my area was hellish between 10inches of new snow and the cops closing off everything.

That intersection is the least populated of the four around the airport - if the plane had skid off in any other direction this would have been a much bigger disaster.

Wow...took me over an hour to get around my neighborhood this morning. Really odd to see a 737 nose down in the middle of the intersection. When you live that close to an airport you always wonder....esp with how close we are to the runways.

It took me almost 3 hours to get from Lemont to Tinley Park last night. It's usually about a 30-45 minute drive depending on how many morons I get stuck behind.

Everyone was damn stupid last night. Walked to a place downtown for dinner with some coworkers. Just watching everyone pretend that traffic rules were out the window was....well, just nuts. I think there was more than just water in that snow last night. Either that or we have a shit-ton of imports living here now. Hopefully yesterday was enough to get them to leave.

Did you take I6 for that drive? I55 was backed up because they closed off exits that feed the Midway area. Not sure I understood why Cicero (a mile east of the accident) needed to be closed but they left Central (where the plane was) open.

I take side roads the whole way... Lemont Road/Main St. -> Archer -> 131st -> etc...

The worst part of the drive was the first hour and a half... which was spent within 2 miles of my office. We're across the bridge, and the fastest traffic got moving before getting across was the speed my car moves with about 1/4 of full pressure on the brakes.

I don't even want to think about what it would have been like had I tried taking 55 last night :S
