I'd go for my 3rd canopy, which I hide in the inside pocket of my jumpsuit.:)

Been there.

Cutaway at 1800'. Pulled reserve immediately. Nothing. Looked RC with end still in the housing. Pulled it out, looked at both pins to see if they were intact and through it away. (Reserve was pulled) Nothing. Rolled over to blow PC hesitation off and saw nothing but blues sky. Rolled back face to earth and thought "Reserve total - guess I'm dead" Waited to hit. I was going to hit off the airport, across the road, behind a small factory building, and in a bulldozed pile of brush and trees. Last thing I would have thought was "I'll go right to the bottom. I wonder how long it will take them to find me." Got opening shock. Checked altimeter, 300'. Looked up to see round reserve. Thought "I'm alive" Looked down and saw I was going to hit a power line. Thought "I'm going to die" Just enough time to turn round 180 degrees, miss line and land in the same pile I was going to hit if I bounced.

When I'd done everything I could and I resigned myself to dying it was like a switch turned off in my head. I immediately calmed down from the excitment (panic?) of the malfunction, cutaway and attempts to fix it.

About jump 87 in 1981. Prototype SST from 74 or 75 national champion Rainbow Flyers.

Worst thing, I did everything right (recognized malfunction, checked altitude, cutaway at appropriate decision hieght, pull reserve right away and stable) and still almost died. The day I decided to become a rigger.
