How did I get dragged into this sordid mess? :S

Been there.

Cutaway at 1800'. Pulled reserve immediately. Nothing. Looked RC with end still in the housing. Pulled it out, looked at both pins to see if they were intact and through it away. (Reserve was pulled) Nothing. Rolled over to blow PC hesitation off and saw nothing but blues sky. Rolled back face to earth and thought "Reserve total - guess I'm dead" Waited to hit. I was going to hit off the airport, across the road, behind a small factory building, and in a bulldozed pile of brush and trees. Last thing I would have thought was "I'll go right to the bottom. I wonder how long it will take them to find me." Got opening shock. Checked altimeter, 300'. Looked up to see round reserve. Thought "I'm alive" Looked down and saw I was going to hit a power line. Thought "I'm going to die" Just enough time to turn round 180 degrees, miss line and land in the same pile I was going to hit if I bounced.

When I'd done everything I could and I resigned myself to dying it was like a switch turned off in my head. I immediately calmed down from the excitment (panic?) of the malfunction, cutaway and attempts to fix it.

About jump 87 in 1981. Prototype SST from 74 or 75 national champion Rainbow Flyers.

Worst thing, I did everything right (recognized malfunction, checked altitude, cutaway at appropriate decision hieght, pull reserve right away and stable) and still almost died. The day I decided to become a rigger.

Terry, I had a similar experience to yours where I thought I was going to die until the round reserve finally opened at 500'. What really amazes me is I got the same sensation that you did that when I realized I was about to die, I just calmed down and it seemed I was suddenly at peace with dieing. :o Anyone else experienced this phenomenon?

Eric Butts had a similar experience. My instructor in Beaumont was actually a witness. Said the reserve finally inflated and they he just flared with all his might, and then rolled around on the ground laughing. Glad to be alive I'm sure.

I had a friend who was in a similar situation; total on his reserve (a Piglet). He tried turning every which way hitting everything (no Jesus string), and finally was turning on his side because he figured it would increase his chances the most possible when it opened at about 300'.

My first thought when hearing that, believe it or not, was "damn -- you should have turned on your back because that's your best chance." It wasn't his day.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Definitely aiming for my rigger's van.B|

Yup, that's what I would do... :D:D

Fuck that...I'd track for my Rigger himself...:)

That's JUST what I was thinking!! :D:D I would hope he could hear me screaming towards him shouting "You sorry son-of-a-bitch!!" at the last minute. B|

But then I'd have to try and remember which one did my last repack...:|

With any luck, they'd be standing next to each other and I'd take 'em both out just to be certain. :)

Yes.

And it's f'ing dangerous as all get out. I was in a bad , bad truck wreck(head on into a concrete culvert at 68 mph) and I had that moment of peace and then I came to the conclusion that I wasn't comfortable with going gently into the good night and put the wheel hard over just in time. Saved my life as if I hadn't, the driver's side floor board would have went like the passenger's side and knifed throught he bottom of the dash. I'd have been a double amputee and almsot certanly would have bled out as it was a good 15 mintues before someone came by and got help.
