The drama of job-searching

Recommended Posts

Here's my little story that I must vent about. There are oh-so-many recruiters for insurance jobs, and that's how I usually do my job searching. As things go in life, some recruiters are great, and some just plain suck. I've had some recruiters try to push me into jobs that I just don't want. Now, I understand that their position is commission-based and all, but if I don't want to move somewhere, a recruiter isn't going to convince me otherwise.

Anyways, a couple of weeks ago, this lady that I had never dealt with before told me about a position in TN. It is a place I would consider, so I immediately sent her my resume and the application form. A day after doing so, a recruiter I really like emailed me about the exact same position. :( I told him I was sorry, but I already applied to it.

A week goes by, and I hear nothing from her. I email her with no response. Another week goes by, and I still have heard nothing from her (this is very odd.) She tells me the hiring guy is out of the office, but she'll let me know what's going on the following day. It had been two days, and I still hadn't heard from her. So, I email the recruiter I like telling him the story. He called them up, found out they didn't even have my resume, and two hours later, he set up an interview for me. :S

Yes, I'm happy I got the interview, but I would have rather had it two weeks ago. At least I know I can cross her off my list of recruiters I use.

A few months ago, I had a recruiter call me for a job I had already interviewed for , been offered and had a verbal agreement pending something more formal. :S So obviously, this guy was still looking around and using more than one recruiter. Since my business is somewhat specialized (incestuous) the recruiters were aggressively calling the same people including my coworkers. I'd had a bad feeling about the whole thing to begin with and when I called him (new perspective employer) on the recruiter issue he tripped all over himself trying to come up with an explanation. I took a pass on the job.

and they want to bring me in!

TN? Heeeehaaaaa! ;)

:D The only thing that would keep me from moving there is my extreme dislike of country music. I'm not sure I could handle it.

You're considering moving to TN but not to CT, what's the deal with that? CT actually not too bad! :P:)
Plus, Beth and I are here and we're some of the coolest people ever! :D

That's exactly why I moved away the first chance I could get (college)! ;) East Tennessee isn't so bad, I guess--I spent most of my life in Knoxville. But...meh, after having lived in Chicago for a number of years and visiting a lot of other big cities, it's suburban hell to me. Anytown, USA.

What area of TN would you be in if you got the job?

The job is in Nashville. There are some definite advantages to Nashville over Chicago (traffic, cost of living.) I love Chicago, though. Having that many great restaurants/pubs within a mile of where I lived was oh so very nice! :D But, I love to camp/hike, and Chicago just isn't the place to do that!

Who knows where I'll end up?!?!?

Yeah, I've had a lot of negative experiences with recruiters through this job search. I learned to really get info about their experience with the client, how they work with them (generally, firms that are retained by the company and get bonuses when they place people will do a better job than folks who are pure commission). I've also learned that the very first thing I do is ask for a detailed job description. I can't tell you how many people look at my resume and say "I'm looking for a project manager" when what they're really looking for is a technical development lead. Very different skill set, and anyone who reads my resume should know that I can't program my way out of a paper bag.

Hope this interview works out for you! I have family in East Tennessee. Honestly, except for Nashville, I think it's probably not that much harder to avoid country music in Tennessee as anywhere else.-

Do tell me who "good" and "bad" are, since I probably have heard of both and might concur...and since everyone else on dz.com would have no clue nor care.
