I can do ok in photoshop, but how did he do the green parts. When I do something like that, I cut it out, select inverse, and then desaturate the rest to make it b/w and leave the color?

Then again, Parachutist tends to publish the same crap from the same people over and over again, when I know I've seen better stuff (that I know was sent in) sent by "nobodies" in the sport.

*shrug* Oh well, that's why we have DZ.com, you get to see the cool photos instead of what an editor thinks is cool.

Actually - Parachutist sent me a survey to fill out about the publication. It came in an envelope with another copy of this month's issue. I said my piece about it in a positive way... They have not received my survey yet, but when they do, I hope they like the time I put into it because they are not going to like how much "wouldn't it be cool if ya" stuff I put into it.:P

Specifically about covers I said:

Also, I pulled the last few months 12/04, 01/05, 02/05, 03/05, 04/05, 05/05, 06/05, 07/05… Guess what – the photos are all “freefall” or “canopy”… There is so much more to skydiving, why not once in a while break the mold and have a photo that does not look like the rest?

Windtunnel

swoop pond reflection where you only see the canopy and jumper in the reflection of the water
an artsy shot of a closeup of stitching on a canopy or some other piece of gear.

Maybe a sepia tone or black and white photo? To keep it legit “photography” – suggest to the photographers to use black and white film and really set up a composition.

WOHA - just like the photo in this thread, huh?

Good ground portrait of someone who has done a lot for skydiving - or even - a closeup of a peice of gear newly invented by them...

Picture of people on the plane.

Something cartoon-esque?

Picture of a bonfire or party going full force at a DZ.

The “Into The Grand Prix” photo on Page 13 is a great shot! With 4th of July being this month, an American Flag is always cool. And look at that shot. Great composition, great color, great contrast! Great cover material – and something that does not match the other months of group freefall.

I was actually happy to see a “funny shot” on the April cover! That one stands out, on my coffee table.

I am glad to know I am not the only one that thinks the magazine gets repetitive. Lets see if my words will make any change like they promised they would in the cover letter to the survey.:D

We digress. I am still in love with that shot posted in this thread.

not that we couldnt use a few more 'personality' covers, but it would be nice if the actual quality of the photo... (composition, originality etc.) mattered more than who took it or who was in it....:S

Skydiving publishes much better photos more often than Parachutist imo..

ps.. this one is rather interesting too... :);)

I know - my second reply to the same post... But I woke up this morning thinking of this photo all night long...

To me, it has to be one of my favorite skydiving photos I have ever seen. Pure beauty.

It captures the essence of skydiving.

A little rebellious - a tattoo.

A little unfinished - a rip in the pants.

A little disjointed - A sleek modern rig against a well used plane.

A little unique - the black-n-white with a touch of color.

A lot happy - the smile on the face.

I am in love with this photo and I don't even know the people who are in it or took it.:)

Skydiving pics are usually better in color, but this portrait is certainly an exception. Not sure if this was just a candid shot, or if she posed, but either way, the result is a great shot!

Your critique is right on the mark!

Jeff
Shhh... you hear that sound? That's the sound of nobody caring!

It is an excellent photo,,,,all points made about Parachutist photos are true,,,but what puzzles me even more,,is that with a forum like DZ.Com why aren't there more interesting pics posted? The gallery is good, but it takes hours to wade thru it..how about a spot inbetween Bonfire and Speakers Corner,,," Hot pics/Cool pics of July " then Sangrio can dump then in galleries or what not and we move to " August " what do you all think? pics are the best....wally

That shot makes me miss Illinois a lot...Even though I'm back everyother weekend at least until October to train and compete in 4way...Its a great shot of an amazing person I just met before I left home by an amazing friend who I miss, reminding me of a place I love and all the other great people there. I just saw both of them this past weekend, and can't wait to see them, and everyone else, again next weekend.
