GrumpySmurf 0 #1 October 18, 2005 ...the days in the US are now officially numbered. Landed a job with EA in Vancouver, starting in Dec. No more Green Card BS, no more 'W', no more getting dollar bills mixed up from all being the same colour, no more not being able to vote, no more -40F January days. Good luck all y'all! CanuckInUSA 0 #13 October 18, 2005 I'll see you at a BC DZ sometime soon. I'm still in the process of trying to land on my feet here in BC. Today's projects are to visit the bank (convert some of that uncolored money into colored money), attempt to get a new cell phone without being forced into some sort of bullshit multi-year contract which seems to be the norm up here for virtually everything and to inquire about getting registered with BC health ... but I've been told there is a multi-month waiting period before I'm eligible. Oh and there is a province wide teachers strike going on right now (all public schools are closed) and every labor union around also seems to be wanting to go on strike to support the teachers. I went through a culture shoke when I first moved to Colorado and now I'm going through another culture shock here in BC. CanuckInUSA 0 #14 October 18, 2005 QuoteSo is there a sudden mass exodus of the Canucks from here? is there something they know that we dont Yah the US (as far as the INS is concerned) doesn't like us while they turn their eye on the huge illegal immigration problem from latin America. But don't piss us 'Nucks off as we're poised to overtake Saudi Arabia as the number one producer of oil in the world. There is a huge oil reserve in Alberta for those who are too ignorant to educate themselves in what's going on outside of the USA ... not that I'm labelling you eeneR as one of those ignorant peeps. riggerrob 643 #15 October 18, 2005 Welcome to Vancouver. Call me at Pacific Skydivers (604) 465-7311 as soon as you get a new phone. As for working at EA, try asking Jaap Sutter (frequent poster in the BASE forum) because he used to wrok there. As for the class action suit filed by EA employees ... Hee! Hee! Young programmers at start-up software companies all work hellacious amounts of over time.

I remember when Jaap Suter worked for them he got a couple of hours off on a Wednesday night to make a jump once. I don't think he had time to pack after or anything, but how much time do you want? So it's way better in Van.
AndyMan 7 #17 October 18, 2005 Dang, you too? Good luck. The number of us Canucks still down here is shrinking. I hope you land on your feet. EA can be tough, but it can pay well, too. Be sure to let us know if you're coming down again. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I'm hoping for some jumpable weather this coming weekend (today is very nice compared to the last couple of days) and if so I plan visiting Pittt Meadows this weekend. GrumpySmurf 0 #19 October 19, 2005 First job out of college was on a little known 3rd person tactical called Jagged Alliance 2 - I know the hours No different from automotive - my longest work day was 27 hours straight - and I've worked though XMas Day, New Years Day, the May, July and September long weekends in a single year as a result of our customer pushing up the launch dates for thier vehicles. Both are deadline driven industries - if you don't like it, there are other industries to work in that frequently pay less. I had inquired in depth about the ea_spouse situation during the interview process.
GrumpySmurf 0 #20 October 19, 2005 Mucho gracias, I'll give you a look up once settled in - now trying to figure out how to fit 1,100 sq.ft of furniture into a 450 sq.ft box. Apartments there are neither big, nor cheap when compared to MidWest America.
JaapSuter 0 #21 October 19, 2005 Hey Mark, I'm actually going back to EA next week. I used to work for them up to a year ago, but took a break to work for Nintendo on Super Mario Strikers. I'm picking up my new work visa one of these days and then I'm headed back to EA. Drop me a note and we'll grab lunch some day. It'll be good to have some more skydivers in the office. As for the horror stories. I've always had a great time at EA. I've worked 100 hour weeks and I've worked 20 hour weeks. I've taken long lunches to go make a skydive and I've pulled overnighters to get something done in time. EA has always treated me exceptionally well, and I have never been asked to do involuntary overtime. From talking to people on other teams I have since learned that it greatly depends on who you report to, but I have always found that it can be what you make of it. I guess the fact that I am going back to the company I left a year ago says it all. It's a great company. JaapSuter 0 #22 October 19, 2005 Hey Rob, how's life? I damn nearly bought myself a Progidy this weekend. James Boole had a demo suit that would have fit us both perfectly. Unfortunately my last paycheque didn't arrive in time, so I had to bail last minute. Shit, it would have been a perfect stupid impulse buying decision, and a great excuse to make it back to the dropzone again. I've only made 22 skydives this year. Very embarrassing. I'll try to make it out there the next sunny day (might be a while it seems), for some long delays... Cheers, Jaap
GrumpySmurf 0 #23 October 19, 2005 Hey Jaap, Which studio will you be situated at? Looks like I'll be at EAX -> looking at places in Yaletown - dunno how anyone can afford a cup of coffee there, let alone a pad. My sister runs into people from the office all the time and they rant and rave about how they love the place. Thanks for the heads up and the offer - now I got a reason to burn up a 'buddy buck'

JaapSuter 0 #25 October 19, 2005 QuoteWhich studio will you be situated at? The Wayburn office, one of the three offices in Burnaby. QuoteLooks like I'll be at EAX. Downtown eh? That's a sweet office. I'll miss working downtown. My Nintendo gig was at Next Level Games in the middle of Yaletown. QuoteLooking at places in Yaletown - dunno how anyone can afford a cup of coffee there, let alone a pad. I've had two apartments in Yaletown. They're pretty expensive for what you get, but being from Europe and all I can't help but fall for the hardwood floors and brick walls and shit. Nowadays I live in Gastown. Great place if you don't mind having the crackheads two blocks away. It's really close to the downtown office and doesn't have to be too expensive. QuoteMy sister runs into people from the office all the time and they rant and rave about how they love the place. Well, it's not a perfect company. But if it was, I wouldn't be working there. There'd be nothing to fix... QuoteThanks for the heads up and the offer - now I got a reason to burn up a 'buddy buck' Haha, sweet. I'll probably get a few too. We can use 'm on each other... Anyway, we're going offtopic. Best to email from here on. When is your start date? Cheers, Jaap
