Rebecca 0 #51 October 19, 2005 QuoteI'm staying. I built the house based on being in hurricane country. The walls are 14.5" CBS/Brick, there is a fully enclosed poured concrete safe room rated to 200mph, two wells and two generators with 500gal of fuel so I should be okay. Holy crap! I think you'll be fine! That's some serious preparation - way to go! You might want to keep that on the DL - I know if I were anywhere near you, I'd be heading over to shelter with you! "Knock knock! According to him, it could be a direct hit in the SWFL area. Storm serge of possibly 2 to 4 ft. Head for the hills if you can. I'll be at work with most of my apartment covered in plastic!!!! One of the roofs still has a fucking tarp on it from last year, and there just gonna go hang with the next door neighbors. Have my firefighter friend calling to convince grandma to leave but we will see. Be safe, I know you will have to work during this but be as safe as you can.Sudsy Fist: i don't think i'd ever say this Sudsy Fist: but you're looking damn sudsydoable in this

I did not suggest you were apologizing to me nor would I expect it. QuoteALL I SAID IS THAT FLORIDA DEALS WITH HURRICANES BETTER THAN LOUISIANA! That is not all you stated. There were several things which I have quoted in the other posts. Comments which clearly downplayed this hurricane. Quotewho's fault is it that you live in hurricane alley anyway? QuoteI do not complain about the hurricanes Once again DO YOU KNOW HOW TO READ! Quotenot the weather's, and not the government's. Here again by this statement you are saying that Florida should not get aid but Louisiana should? You are the one who made the off-wall satements. I am not trying to piss you off. Just open your eyes and realize that the statements just should not have been made at all. People around the country blow Fl off b/c we get hurricanes. By that rationale then people who live in Tornado alley or on an earthquake fault should not have aid or anything. This is what your downplaying signifies. billvon 2,990 #69 October 19, 2005 >how and/or why did this thing strengthen so quickly? Hurricanes are formed when warm water "powers" updrafts into colder air. To start off, imagine warm water, cool air (like you get in autumn) and no winds at all. At some point, the water warms the lower air, and a 'bubble' of warm air breaks off and floats upward, because warm air rises. That starts sucking warm air from near the bubble, and cold air drops onto the water farther away. Now there's some circulation; the air is warmed by the water, rises, then cools off and drops back down. All this is powered by the heat content of the water. Now, as that hot air rises, it expands since the pressure drops. (Higher altitude=lower pressure.) Since it was near the water it is also moist. At some point it cools enough that the water 'comes out of solution' and forms first clouds then rain. That's where the rain comes from. Also, since the air is rising and the planet is spinning, a normally imperceptible force called the Coriolis force tends to start the whole system spinning. That's where you get the characteristic 'eye' surrounded by a rotating storm. Now, you can think whatever you want about global warming, but the sea temperatures have been getting gradually warmer over the last century. There are a large number of cycles that drive water temperatures, and they often overlap and interfere with each other. But the general trend is for warmer oceans, which means more intense hurricanes. I attached a graph of hurricanes over the last 150 years or so for reference. Which means that we're likely to see more hurricanes like these in coming years, although not every year will be as bad as this one. Those other cycles will still have a lot to do with the weather each year.
billvon 2,990 #70 October 19, 2005 Wow. Now it's 882 millibars, making it the strongest north atlantic storm in history. Think about that number - 882 millibars. That's the air pressure at the center, which means that if you had a skydiving altimeter, it would read 3700 feet if you were at sea level. (So tip for all you Floridians jumping in the eye when it passes - pull high! And watch the landings; they'll be worse than Lost Prairie.) Another way to look at it is that the eyewall is holding back an immense amount of pressure - 460 pounds per square foot. It's doing that with the energy of its rotation; basically the inertia of the water and air in the eyewall is 'pressing outwards' with incredible force. 460 pounds per square foot, or 13 billion pounds per square mile of eyewall. That's a lot of pressure.
