dustin19d 0 #1 October 10, 2005 I always thought when you get your film developed they remove any pornagraphic, or Extremely obsene pictures. I turned in my rolls of film from Iraq today and I got back all the pictures that contained D#ad Iraqis. I was expecting them to be missing and I was surprised to get them back. But I did get several funny looks from the lady behind the counter as she handed them over.

Sopheavy 0 #4 October 10, 2005 My brother has a friend who came back from Iraq. He took a ton of pictures and he asked my brother to ask me if I can develop it for him since I develop some of my black and white. However, they were all in color and color is too complicated for me so I declined. I told him to send it to the photo lab but he doesn't want to because he said that he's afraid to because of the nature of it. Well, since that was the case, I told my brother I;m not going to touch those film with a 10 foot pole.---------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- If you want to see the rainbow, you gotta put up with the storm. happythoughts 0 #5 October 10, 2005 My dad has a pic that was taken from his bomber in WWII in N. Africa. It shows an Italian battleship with a "half-circle" on the side of it. Bomb blasts are round. The other half of that circle imploded the side of the ship. Since the ships in the harbor that day became unusable, the Italian navy could not fight. Therefore, the govt surrendered. But I did get several funny looks from the lady behind the counter as she handed them over. An ex-girlfriend had previously worked at a photo lab in a small town in upstate New York. She told me that they got all sorts of weird shit in, including the crime scene pics from the local police. They actually looked forward to that stuff. She told me that occasionally they would get pics of large marijuana plants and other illegal stuff too. To my knowledge, pics of dead Iraqis don't violate any U.S. laws, particularly if they were not killed in a criminal action, so I would think you should raise hell if some place refuses to print them. We see those kinds of images in the news all the time, even though the US media is very hesitant to show the really gruesome shots. I'd actually be a bit surprised if the people who developed your film did not print off a few copies for themselves! No doubt you'll get some negative remarks in the Bonfire for taking shots like that, but screw that--my hat's off to you for putting your life on the line for our country! sinker 0 #7 October 10, 2005 well, personally i'd find it a little objectionable if someone brought pics of dead bodies to the neighborhood grocery store photolab for developing, better to use a more professional service, that's what they are there for. (don't know where you did your developing). Not everyone can stomach that kind of stuff and it isn't best to potentially traumatize people unnecessarily. my comments not withstanding, thanks for your service to our country. -the artist formerly known as sinker
skydiver51 0 #8 October 10, 2005 personally I would never have brought back pics of dead NVA from my tour in viet nam. I went there and did what I was told to do but I will never like the thought I killed other humans. even if they killed fellow americans.
cameramonkey 0 #9 October 14, 2005 just use an ultra-humongo, ultra cheap send off service (think wal-mart). those places are so damn automated and overloaded that they are only spot checked. Doing it that way and I would be surprised if they DID yank any. Sending it thru a 1 hr service on the other hand.... expect them to get tossed. Unless you hit them at a peak time, then its anybody's guess. so if you can follow somebody with a dozen rolls or so, they'll be scrambling so fast they wont look. (I used to work for a 1 hr lab) Just dont take them anything you wouldnt want to have made copies of. that happens ALOT. when they say " we threw them away" it usually means " I put it in my freak album"Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO! A few thoughts - Do you yourself consider them obscene? If yes, then maybe a local developer isn't such a good idea. Digital cameras eliminate the problem. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with such pictures, but I think it's also important to consider what you do with them and who sees them. The local lady who runs off the prints might fall into the category of people who would get offended; hard to know without knowing her. Also, there have been some abuses with such pictures; a few dozen soldiers have traded pictures of dead Iraqis (with funny captions like 'barbequed Iraqi') for access to porn on a US website. I think that's wrong, even though they own the pictures. But there's nothing wrong with keeping them for your own viewing and for showing to friends/family who you think would be OK with it (IMO.)
