sangiro 26 #1 September 27, 2005 Heya all, I wanted to write a quick note to provide you all with an opportunity to discuss the merger between Dropzone.com and Rockclimbing.com that we just announced. As some of you know I've been talking for a while about doing something similar to what we have here in the rock climbing world. Rockclimbing.com and Dropzone.com has almost identical histories and share a lot of common values. Trevor Allred founded the site about 10 years ago as a grass-roots effort because he loves to climb and wanted to create a place where climbers could get together. Rockclimbing.com grew to a point where Trevor had to make some decisions about his future. I for one can certainly understand the effort and time it takes to manage a site like this. We started discussing a possible meger about a year ago and both agreed it would be a great fit to bring them together. This doesn’t mean that we will have one website. Rockclimbing.com and Dropzone will continue to function as two sites, but they will start to share more and more technology and resources that will create more efficiencies and hopefully a much better community. Daniel du Toit (ddt) has come on board to help me manage Rockclimbing.com. That will be his primary responsibility and while I'll help out over there, Dropzone.com will remain my "baby". We're excited about the opportunity to build on what the team at Rockclimbing.com has created over many years. They should be proud. Read the press release, we'd love to hear your questions, comments and feedback. A big welcome to everyone from Rockclimbing.com who may drop in at Dropzone.com. Onwards! TomAiello 26 #2 September 27, 2005 Do you have any plans to create a singly, unified login for the two sites? Personally, I think that would be very nice.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
The111 1 #3 September 27, 2005 QuoteDo you have any plans to create a singly, unified login for the two sites? I already have the same username on both sites, by chance. From the article: Products that interest both communities can now be promoted through integrated, effective marketing campaigns. You mean like slackline? I've been doing a lot of that lately...www.WingsuitPhotos.com

RoysPlayThing 0 #5 September 27, 2005 All I have to say is... Darn.. Maybe I'm not clear on the merge... sangiro 26 #6 September 27, 2005 Tom, I think it would be safe to say that that would be pretty high up on our priority list. Merging user databases come with a lot of challenges but the advantages are obvious...Safe swoops Sangiro
TomAiello 26 #7 September 27, 2005 QuoteI already have the same username on both sites, by chance. Me too. I almost never post on RC.com, though. I think I've made a grand total of one post, in a conversation there about BASE.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
sangiro 26 #8 September 27, 2005 QuoteMaybe I'm not clear on the merge... But I feel, There goes my Rockclimbing site. You're right, you're not clear... Rockclimbing.com will continue to function as a separate site. We will share technologies and resources and look for ways to mine the synergies but the sites will continue to focus on their own domains and serve their own core communities.Safe swoops Sangiro
BGill 0 #9 September 27, 2005 I think what most people want to know is, how will this affect us? Will premiere member benefits work on rc.com? Will we get tons of whuffos chiming in on our threads? Will the layout of dz.com change? Are we going to be subjected to non-skydiving advertising and banners? What benefits will come across from this merger? What are the actual changes that will affect our post-whoring?
RoysPlayThing 0 #10 September 27, 2005 Hmmm.... Will the sites share Mod's Now? ... I'm not completely understanding the advantages to the merge ... But thats okay, cause I'm a dingy blonde (sort of).. I'm not very technical, and I'm a complicated thinker. _______________________________________________ My mind is like a parachute...it functions only when open. Kid_Icarus 0 #11 September 27, 2005 I agree. Will we start seeing North Face Ad's and stuff? Hope not. I understand DZ.com is a service an needs to make some $. But this sounds like a merger to increase advertising dollars, nothing more. What do we have in common with rock climbing? I love this site, don't get me wrong. ________________________________________ "What What.....

skycat 0 #13 September 27, 2005 Sweet!! I have the same user name over there as I do here. Hopefully this sharing of resources means the crappy search functionality over there will get fixed. Fly it like you stole it!

JaapSuter 0 #15 September 27, 2005 QuoteWhat do we have in common with rock climbing? Mmm, let me think... 1. Risk management 2. High stress situations 3. Gear knowledge required 4. Non-participants wondering why we do it 5. Exploring new boundaries of where we can go and what we can do I am incredibly excited about this merge. Climbing gives me what I once hoped skydiving could. Bringing some climbing spirit back into skydiving would be a good thing. Congratulations to the Dropzone and Rockclimbing management! Gawain 0 #16 September 27, 2005 Congratulations on your "baby's" new sibling. You do good work and I expect you'll add a lot of "good stuff" to rockclimbing.com. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! marcandalysse 0 #17 September 27, 2005 QuoteWe will share technologies and resources That sounds like a good idea to pool resources. I just visited their site, it sure loads slowly. Can't say I like the way its designed....very busy home page for example...Guess I am spoiled by our DZ.com! I don't want to be on that site's database though! My bouldering days are long over.... philbox 0 #18 September 28, 2005 Hi guys, let me introduce myself. My name is Phil Box and I`ve been helping to run rockclimbing.com for quite some time now. I am fully supportive of this decision to merge the two sites. I do believe that it will invigourate rc.com with the guys from this site becoming actively involved in the management and ownership of rc.com. I`m also sure that the economies of scale that the increased userbase will work to our advantage on both sites. We have some special things that we can bring to dropzone and no doubt this also holds for the reverse. In answer to the site being slow to load, yes that does happen on occasion, once Tim our head code guru looks into it then pages should load as fast as usual. As for me and parachutes, why jump out of a perfectly good aeroplane. Heh, I think I`ll hafta invest in a chute for when I go soloing up a big wall in case I fall off. Anway, expect me to drop in from time to time, I`ll try not to be a bother. If there is anything I can do for people wishing to make the most of their rc.com experience then do feel free to drop me a PM over on that site. bob.dino 1 #19 September 28, 2005 QuoteBut this sounds like a merger to increase advertising dollars, nothing more. Actually, it sounds like the code behind rockclimbing.com is falling over, and that it needs a thorough overhaul. Maybe their servers are seriously overloaded too. And that the original owner didn't have the time/money/expertise to fix the problems. So Sangiro bought the site.... ...at least, that's the way I read it. Good luck with the new management groups, it sounds like they are looking forward to this as much as you are. It`s now a done deal and so instead of looking at the glass half empty we are wanting to look at the benefits for both sites.
