br0k3n 0 #1 October 4, 2005 So there I was, Sunday night having just left a party about 2am walking down the street looking for a cab… Anyway natured called so off I went into a bush, as I did the cops pulled and questioned my girlfriend as to what was happening… anyway she explains that there are no cabs, and asked them if they would give us a lift home… and to my surprise they agreed… how cool free ride home from the cops……----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+

tdog 0 #11 October 4, 2005 That paddy (edit for spelling) wagon you rode in looks like the ones they use locally to pick up the drunk and homeless to return them to the nearest safe spot so they don't endanger themselves... Normally these rides are not "optional", but "required." How much partying did ya do... The cops might have sold you on the fact they were doing you a favor when in reality they were getting ya off the streets despite your wishes... (you are correct BTW, but still you didn't know that ) Secondly, there were ( and oft times still are) loads of drunken Irishmen in Oz and they need to be carted away (some still do)You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! Blues, Cliff It is true that "Paddy," a familiar form of the common Irish name Padraic (or Patrick) was used in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a generic, and often uncomplimentary, term for an Irishman, both in the U.S. and England. But while "paddy" certainly was used as an insult in the past, and Irish immigrants were without doubt the victims of discrimination, I think that it takes a pretty thin skin to find a grave insult in the term "paddy wagon." Among other things, the fact that it remains unclear whether the "paddy" involved was the arresting officer or the miscreant being arrested rather clouds the logic of taking offense. That "paddy" is also used in non-pejorative contexts ("Saint Paddy's Day") has also largely robbed the word of its sting----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+
 grue 1 #20 October 5, 2005 Quoteyeah, sure oli, the cops were just friendly enough to "escort" you and your "girlfriend" out of what was probably Kings Cross from the looks of it... good excuse buddy, good excuse...
