Deep air

It's suicide!

This is what whuffos say about skydiving, and skydivers say about base ;) In reality either one is a technical activity with a certain level of risk and reward, requiring specific skills and experience. Same goes for deep air.

Out of curiousity,

what are the rewards ?

I am absolutely not slamming this, just wondering. I never did any mixed-gas diving, and my deepest dive on regular air was 78ft. I would imagine at 40m (129ft) according to Martinis law - you are quite intoxicated ( 4 atmospheres )...

I can guess the risks, but are the rewards just being able to do it and being capable to manage the situation ?

tnx !

Saves on margarita mix....:D
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

Hard to answer clearly. What are the rewards of BASE? "Adrenalin" does not explain it, but does play a role. Likewise, narcosis is awesome, but it is only one of the elements. The state of mind it puts you in is a real reward for those who like such a sick feeling ;)

Diving deep on air, naturally ;) Anything beyond 40m. It is as old as scuba itself, and not a favorite subject in the mags.

I think 50m is a better threshold for the conversation you want to have, unless you want to do war with the DIR types, then it's 30m.

I'll take air to ~140some feet. beyond that depth the defenses for the practice are pretty weak. At those depths you can afford mix. The record attempts are just a lame form of suicide.

Magazines like Rodale's are suitable for the Padi OW crowd, the ones whose card suggests they shouldn't go deeper than 60ft. They don't have the skill, the gear, or the training to be doing 150ft on any gas.

The only defense and the whole idea is to get narked ;) Trimix is the way for anything else. A simple parallel is jumping off a roof vs. taking the stairs. A practicality and safety of stairs is undoubtful, however there are some who like to jump.

Deep air records are indeed gnarly, however 150..250ft playground is quite comparable to BASE in many ways ;)

about comparisons to skydiving/basejumping ... lets say its like skydiving, only you'r more or less wasted while doing it :) (fatality rates in these sports are quite similar afaik, so its comparable either way).. some say you get used to depth narcosis, which is bullshit. you get used to swimming around, sure, but the minute you get into trouble, your mind is gone. BUT im not saying its bad.. :) just that its crazy. crazy has a tendency of being fun...
