wireless network - not mine

Recommended Posts

Yes. If he looks and knows what he's looking for. Chances are that if it's an open network, he won't know what to look for anyway.

When the router dishes out an IP address via DHCP, it's listed in the LAN status window. Your MAC address will be listed along with the IP address your computer was given.

There are instructions in every router manual to enable security. If he doesn't enable it... well.. :P

Ok - nobody uses an open network, except somebody who has absolutely no idea what he`s doin`.
Anyway, good luck and if he finds out, bad luck. As long as it is not illegal, I`m fine. :)

Dont assume all of that, for over a year I had my wireless wide open, I had people using it occasionally, but I knew what I was doing... I did it until someone decided to abuse it, so I shut it down... Some people just dont care if people use their internet. :P

Well, actually... mines open. But the signal isn't very strong. I've yet to see anyone by my room mates logged onto it.

If you can log onto the router with the default password, then he probably just took it out of the box and plugged it in... and probably doesn't or is too lazy to set it up securely.

At my old place, I used my neighbors wireless connection fairly often but didn't do any downloads that would use up the bandwidth and make his connection really slow.

Actually, its not.

That makes me happy, actually. If you aren't going to take the time to secure your network...

;)

My old ISP actually had instructions on their page on how to share your internet with neighbors if you so desired to do so .... Really like that company, they basicly have a "do whatever you want with your connection as long as its not illegal" policy .. I ran an FTP server and all kinds of crap off of that one.. They even gave me reverse DNS on the IP...
