The day the earth stands still.

Recommended Posts

Very soon the earth will no longer rotate.

I work it out to be in about 120,000 years !

According to the Daily Telegraph ....

Leap seconds, an extra "pip", are sometimes added in December to delay Big Ben and keep atomic time in tune with the cycle of day and night determined by the Earth's rotation, which is slowing by about two milliseconds per day.

Or am I no good at maths?

Edited: because there's only one math :$

Edited again: because someone said there could be maths B|

The problem with this question to this particular population, sir, is that none of us are motivated enough to even attempt to want to make that calculation...

-And math or no, you're definitely no good at spellings... :D:D:D

My theory is that it spins with a little help from Meteor strikes. Who's up for a polar change ?:o

From some calculations there has been many polar changes in our past.

This is a common misunderstading. The Earth's rotation is not slowing down by two milliseconds per day, it is slower than the standard 24h day by about two milliseconds. It's like all clocks are fast by two milliseconds/day, once in a while they need to be moved forward by one (leap) second to mantain the correct relationship between clock time and actual time of day.
If the Earth were slowing down that much it would be already standing still, as it is already much older than that.
Cheers,

Valentino

You are pobably referring to the magnetic poles switching places (i.e North and South swapped). This is and unrelated phenomenon to the Erath's rotational axis moving around, which it actually does but not so much that the Earth can actually turn upside down.
I don't have the actual figures but we're talking meters/year and the motion is quite erratic as it is caused by masses moving around because of things like earthquakes, the water cycle etc.

Vale

Yes it is becasue all the fat people live in the Western Hemisphere and that makes the planet wobble.

Actually, you are probably correcte with saying maths.

Think about it: Math is the short term for Mathematics. Do we saying I am studying Mathematic?

No, because Mathematics is a generic term for many different areas of study.

The English say maths. And while I usually argue about things like chips, crisps, and favour, this is one where I think they are correct. :D;)
Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

Ahhh, that explains it. The quote was from the newspaper. Reading news or watching it, is starting to drive me crazy these days. I love (read hate) the news on the radio where after reporting on Kate Moss's coke habit, they then cut to someone giving their opinion of it. They never tell you which idiot they found on the street to give their oh so important comment. Grrrr , time to go to SC I think.

Nope, the earth will stop slowing once it has tide-locked to the moon. That's what's slowing it down now; all that water (and crust) moving takes energy, and that energy comes from the earth's rotation. When everything settles down the moon will be a lot closer and the day will be longer.

I feel your pain man. I've been an astronomy and earth science enthusiast since I was a kid and I tell you if I had a cent for every piece of BS I've seen (mis)reported I wouldn't be complaining as much about the price of jump tickets today! :)The Internet, if properly used, can be a slightly better source of information, here is a very informative page from an excellent source on the whole leap second issue

I am always amazed that Newton had all this figured out in Book 3 of Principia.

But if we all get together and play "kick out of line twists" in the same direction at the same time, we can restore those two milliseconds per day.

Ready. Set. Go!

It's called Opinion Forming, not reporting. Media figured it out a log time ago. There're so good at it that they don't care that it's so freakin' obvious because "we" still just following along like sheep.
