Dog killed wild cat

Recommended Posts

I had to watch a dog killing a wild cat. He threw her around, ... and played with her at least 20 minutes and I`m still not sure if she was really dead when he finally stopped.

I was afraid to pull him away, because he was a fighting dog and really big.

Everybody was happy that he killed the cat, because there are a lot of them around in this area, but I`m still sad.

Next time use a spray bottle with water, spray the dog in the face and firmly say NO. This is how to break up dog fights without getting in the middle of it.

I like cats and I like dogs and what that dog did was very wrong wild cat or family pet. The problem is that now that the dog caught one it will continue to hunt cats and other small animals and could easily start to go after small dogs. Kind of depends on the dog and how it generalize the animals that it likes to hunt.

edit to add.....missed the part about it being trained to fight, that dog is a menace and could be dangerous to other people living in the comunity.
Fly it like you stole it!

As far as I know , its a federal crime to kill any animal unless it is legal hunting and you are permitted to hunt. Granted I live in GA but Im pretty sure its a federal crime at least the shooting part. The dog part, well unless you can prove its a fighting dog, they wont do anything
Sudsy Fist: i don't think i'd ever say this
Sudsy Fist: but you're looking damn sudsydoable in this

Who's dog was it and how did YOU know it was a "fighting dog"? (Or am I just missing the point and your simply talking about the "actions" of this dog?)

And, er, who's the "everybody" you're talking about?

Last time I checked, dog fighting was not legal.

Remedy to the situation if I were to witness this behaviour: Can of pepper spray (the bear-protection strength) and a baseball bat to the mut. Done deal.

I stay with a family in Iowa for a few months and the dog`s owner is the daughter`s friend. (bad english today). I`m not sure, if I used the right words. In German you call, for example, staffords, ..., fighting dogs, because they`re are a potential risk and you and your dog have to pass a special test and follow special rules.

But if you don`t hit him right, he will chase you.

Not that this is going to go over well, but...

You did the right thing staying away. When a dog is killing something it is running off pure instinct....doesnt matter to the dog much whether it is a cat or your arm, leg, head, etc. This particular breed has the 'jaws of death'B|B|
The dogs bred for fighting (whether this one was actively fight training or not) do not always respond the same way as other dogs to our requests to cease their actions. A dog in the middle of an attack who perceives your actions to be that of an attack on him would not be a pleasant thing to be anywhere near!

As hard as it was to watch, the cat was most likely killed instantly, I wont get into the details.

I would let the owners know what you saw in an informative way..if their dog is dangerous they need to know (assuming they dont already).
Life is not fair and there are no guarantees...

Sounds like a great bunch of folks to hang out with. :S

Again, if I were in a situation like that, I would think that "putting a bike between" them is not as effective as a bat or a 2x4.

A dog that is "trained" to chase cats with the thought that it won't kill them.....I don't buy it.

I wonder about people who take in agressive animals, then train and encourage them to be more agressive. They give responsible pet owners a bad name!

As someone else already pointed out, this dog now has a taste for blood. Next time, it might not be a stray, but someone's pet or a small child.

Hopefully the dog will attack the owner.
