snoochiebooches 0 #1 August 4, 2008 Hello, I'm new to dropzone and this is my first post. I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me what the biggest canopy size i can fit in a 475" space is? I'm looking for possibly a spectre if that helps any since it's a 7 versus a 9 cell.
AggieDave 6 #2 August 4, 2008 You would be better off posting what container you have and what size container you have instead of just the pack volume. Or better yet, contact the manufacture of your container and ask them what sized Spectre would fit in their rig. Same with your reserve question.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
snoochiebooches 0 #3 August 5, 2008 It is a 2003 talon 2 with a T5 3.0 container. It originally came with a pd143 reserve and a 150 stiletto. Really need a main around 190 and am looking for a low pack volume main that could fit, any suggestions?
AggieDave 6 #4 August 5, 2008 Quoteany suggestions? Upsize your container. Rule of thumb is one size either direction on the main. You can get reserves that pack smaller then a PDr-143, but when it comes to reserves I really stick to PD (and did long before the company did anything for me). Don't try to shoehorn yourself into a container that puts you on canopies that are severely inappropriate for you. You'll spend a LOT more money on getting that femur fixed then you saved on your used container.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." Blink 1 #5 August 5, 2008 Rigging Innovations says it can fit up to a 170 Spectre, I wouldn't recommend putting anything larger in it because it can put a lot of stress on the canopy. Another recommendation would be to get antoher container, because even if you do get a 190 in there, a 143 reserve is not a smart decision for your skill level. klingeme 1 #6 August 5, 2008 Just making sure, but you don't plan to jump a 190 main with a 143 reserve, do you?
snoochiebooches 0 #7 August 5, 2008 No, just researching. I already planned on upsizing to a 160 reserve if i were to keep the container, but it's looking like i may do better gettin rid of this one.

If you "really need a main around 190" then why would you consider a 160 reserve?
snoochiebooches 0 #9 August 5, 2008 I weigh 160-165. New to the sport and learning as i go. Sorry if my post seems like i'm ignorant but i really AM fresh into all of this. I ran across a really good deal with the rig i bought if for nothing but the cypres so be it, but if it did work out the gate great otherwise i'm exploring other avenues. Probably will either sell the rig as is without the main or pick up a cheap used main and try to sell it for what i can to get what i CAN use right away as to not throw money away on rentals. Just tryin to find the most affordable avenue without compromising safety. Thanks for all the advise. It's great to find a place that you can hear what you NEED to know. dragon2 2 #10 August 6, 2008 If you weigh 165 you need a 190 or bigger reserve! A 160 would put you at a wingloading of 1.2 which is pretty high (ie, frankly fairly stupid at your jumpnumber). ciel bleu, Saskia
davadikian 1 #11 August 6, 2008 Quotefrankly fairly stupid at your jumpnumber How about a little positive advise on where to start as opposed to how he is being "fairly stupid"... He has admitted he is new and doesnt know what he knows. He may not even know what you mean by a w/l of 1.2. Why even bother to take the time to reply if you dont have something positive to say?? These types of replies are all too frequent nowadays and very tiring. If you INSIST on replying, to keep your post numbers respectable, at least give the "talk to your instructors" shtick, at least thats somewhat productive. Sorry Mr dragon this isnt directed at just you, there is a post a couple up from here asking "if he needs a 190 then why is he getting a 160" answer, he doesnt know any better, he is brand new. davadikian 1 #12 August 6, 2008 Your post isnt ignorant, youll get that vibe from this site especially when you just start out and dont "know" a lot. Dont take it personal there is good info here you just have to filter through the 70% of extraneous shit to get to it. Youre smart to not throw your money away on rentals, just take good care of your first rig because you WILL outgrow it before too long and you should be able to sell it for close to what you paid for it... Just starting out you REALLY need to talk to your instructor in person at the DZ, they can explain about starting with getting canopy sizes that are appropriate for your weight/skill level and then you can get a container that can accommodate those canopy sizes. Containers are sized to fit a certain size canopy combo and material is material, the larger the size of the canopy, the more material to pack up. So there is really no way around a larger container for a larger canopy. Some canopies pack a little smaller or larger than others but not ~40 square feet different. Hopefully this makes sense. Safe Jumps!!
dragon2 2 #13 August 6, 2008 Because I already posted that I think the OP needs a bigger reserve in another thread. So repeating the "need" for a 160 IS fairly stupid IMO. BTW, I'm no Mr ciel bleu, Saskia
danielcroft 2 #14 August 6, 2008 The reported pack volume of a Spectre 190 is 475. I looked this up because that's what I have, for comparison, I believe (please double check) that the pack volume of a Sabre 2 190 is ~416 IIRC. Here's the link to Paragear showing the Spectre's pack volume: http://www.paragear.com/templates/parachute.asp?group=92&t2parent=2&t3parent=9&parent=35&level=4 edit: to make clicky
