Dagny 0 #226 August 31, 2005 Quoting CNN: QuoteDeteriorating conditions in New Orleans will force authorities to evacuate the tens of thousands of people at city shelters, including the Superdome, where a policeman told CNN unrest was escalating. The officer expressed concern that the situation could worsen overnight after three shootings, looting and a number of attempted carjackings during the afternoon. When I worked the dome during Hurricane Georges in '98, the people in the dome became crazy restless, bordering on hostile, in wanting to leave after the storm. I can only imagine, given the current conditions, that things are much worse now. They're going to have to be careful because once that many people set their mind to leave and decide to just go for it, it's going to be more than the national guard can handle. (despite the fact that they do a damn good job policing restless crowds) Hopefully they'll evacuate everyone (to where, I just have no idea) before the situation becomes newsworthy.Take me, I am the drug; take me, I am hallucinogenic. -Salvador Dali
HeatherB 0 #227 August 31, 2005 Ugh. I figured it was flooded, but was hoping otherwise... I hope you hear from your aunt and uncle!! Still no word from my friend. But maybe they are at the hotel and they're okay. Venturing out seems like a really bad idea, so hopefully they have stayed put. *hugs*
spidermonky 0 #228 August 31, 2005 I got in contact with some of Tammy's family and she called them while in the process of making a hole in the roof. At least I know she was on the right track. Also, several thousand people have now been rescued from St. Bernard and they're kept in various shelters in the area. No idea how long until communication with them. Michele 1 #229 August 31, 2005 I just can't believe the devastation that has occurred, and is still occurring. I hope everyone is reunited with their loved ones and friends as fast as possible. Everyone affected by Katrina is in my prayers and thoughts. There's just nothing else to say, really. BillyVance 34 #230 August 31, 2005 QuoteI heard that a large part of Metairie is flooded. But, it may include only the area closest to the 17th street canal and the Lake. I did hear, though (third hand) that Rummell high school was dry. How about Slidell? Any news on that area? Friends of my parents left their home in Slidell Sunday morning to stay with my parents up in Huntsville, AL. melstarr 0 #235 August 31, 2005 i want to first apologize for not emailing or PMing everyone individually or calling out via phone. as some of you know... either electricity is out (still in various sections of baton rouge & ALL of new orleans area) and the phone network is either down or overloaded. i'm on a very slow dialup connection in lafayette, louisiana. jj & i are going to be okay, but it will take a while for all of our friends in new orleans & surrounding areas as well as coastal mississippi... as their homes have been completely destroyed in the flooding. thank you all for your thoughts and prayers in this tragic time. again i apologize for the short reply. love, hug & kiss you all so very much! ~ meL* Pink Mafia / Tunnel Mafia Sister

Two major phone providers lost their New Orleans switches to flood waters which means they lost service to not just NO but surrounding areas. They are working as fast as they can to bring service back up, but are running into other problems due to the HUGE volume of calls to the area. (people trying to find their loved ones and emergency personnel) I know this is painful (I'm on the receiving end of customer complaints) please be patient with these carriers they are trying to bring the infrastructure back up as fast as they can. On another note it's times like these I wish my dog was fully mature and had his SARs training done, we would be there in a heart beat trying to find people. It's events like this that make me even more determined to get him through the training and certified.Fly it like you stole it!
SpeedRacer 1 #238 August 31, 2005 I've got this Led Zeppelin song in my head now: If it keeps on rainin', levee's goin' to break, [X2] When The Levee Breaks I'll have no place to stay. Mean old levee taught me to weep and moan, [X2] Got what it takes to make a mountain man leave his home, Oh, well, oh, well, oh, well. Don't it make you feel bad When you're tryin' to find your way home, You don't know which way to go? If you're goin' down South They go no work to do, If you don't know about Chicago. Cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good, Now, cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good, When the levee breaks, mama, you got to move. All last night sat on the levee and moaned, [X2] Thinkin' about me baby and my happy home. Going, going to Chicago... Going to Chicago... Sorry but I can't take you... Going down... going down now... going down.... Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
