Anybody been to Chinque Terra in Italy.

I was there about 4 years ago. 5 little towns pretty much hanging on cliffs on the side of the mediteranean. Very nice scenery. Not much in the way of parties, it seemed, but I had the best meal I ate in 2 weeks in Italy in a restaurant called 'Il Cecio', in one of the towns (I forget which one, maybe Corniglia). There was a lot more european tourists there then americans, if that matters. Also, the local wine was great, and pretty cheap, especially the whites. Overall, it was a very chill, beautiful and laid back place. Nice beaches, too.

HELL YES!!
I went there about 10 years ago, and have been trying for about 10 years to get back there.
It is one of my all time favorite places in Italy (i have only been around the northern part....)

So the deal:
cinque terre means five lands, or five towns (lands taken for towns, literal vs. practical translation.) You get to the first (or last;)) and then you can hike up into the mountains then over, down to the next town. All the town are pushed up to the base of the mountains, and are very close to the sea...the hikes go to about 1000' or so, and i think the longest one is 5 miles between the towns. it is not hardcore hiking, but the view is phenomenal the whole way. Plus each town has its own flavor, and you can find really nice "hotels" to stay in (more like BB with no breakfast...one room available type places..) which go for about $20 US a night (or were in 1996). Plus, most of the "hotels" have views of the sea....very cozy and basic, (just a bed and sink and toilet, rustic) The people there are super nice, and it helps if you speak italian, but is not required. Awesome place, spectacular views, cool people....good easy hikes.

There are places to eat around there, seafood is plentiful. Parties, no idea...

Valinda and I were there last fall. It's a damn romantic place, lots of good food, wine, and hiking. Of the 5 towns, the western is the most built up and touristy. We stayed at Rio Magiorre, the eastern one, and just hiked up and down the trail. Loved it, can't wait to make it back. Have a great time.:)
BTW, it's "Cinque Terre" pronounced chinkway terray.

I was there this June. It's possible to hike between all five villages in one day, but you'll have to get up early and take the shortest trails (closest to the sea and most expensive). If you're lazy the railroad pops out of the mountains in each village.

The coolest trick I've got for 'ya: Whenever you eat at a restaurant (goes for all of Italy): Don't bother with the wine list. Ask for the house wine ('Vino del la Casa' I think it translates to). Almost every restaurant makes their own wine- you'll get it straight from the cask in a bottle with no label so it's 'a bit young. It's dead cheap and usually very good.

I've been to the Cinque Terre and it is beautiful! The water is the bluest, clearest water anywhere and the small towns are all so wonderfully relaxing you'll want to stay, eat, snorkel and just do nothing for the rest of your life. If you do venture on the foot path, WEAR HIKING SHOES!!!! I didn't and fell alot and was pissed/scared to death on much of it. It is a strenuous path and frankly because it is n't in sue-happy US it is kinda freakin' dangerous. Much of it is on cliffs. Be careful but also enjoy walking past the gates to secret vineyards and beautiful flowers.

Take shoes for the beach as it is rocky! And enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

edited to say: I'm not a big hiker so they were strenuous for me. I see others here not necessarily feeling the same way. Let us know what you thought!

Gubbio is in the central part but worth the trip. Romantic medieval city with good food.

The whole country is bellisimo! Have fun! I love to visit but would never live there. Took me a whole day to mail a package there once and I decided it would be the end of me if I stayed there. Still the people are SOOO nice and friendly and everything is beautiful, good.
