VanillaSkyGirl 6 #1 August 20, 2005 I am considering going to Vancouver, BC in mid-Sept. for a few days. (Yes, it's a very short trip.) I am just now going to do some research for this possible upcoming trip. I was hoping that someone could help to guide me in the right direction. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions as to what to do while there?

In less than an hour you can be here and its much nicer here than in Vancouver with all their dope smoking old hippy types!"Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy
Guest #3 August 20, 2005 Depends on your tastes. There are tons of wonderful places to visit in the area. I suggest Granville Island above everything else. It's a bit of a tourist trap (sort of like the SF or Seattle waterfront), but it's really neat and laid-back. As for skydiving, Pitt Meadows is an excellent DZ. Abbotsford is a nice place too, but it's a little further out. Chilliwack is a delightful Cessna DZ out in the Frasier Valley (it's soooo picturesque there!) but it's a longer drive East on Canadian Highway 1. The spousal unit and I have been up there a few times, and we'd be glad to turn you on to some worthwhile stuff. PM for details if you're interested. Make sure you've got a passport or birth certificate when you go. A driver's license doesn't do it anymore. mh ."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." slug 1 #4 August 20, 2005 HI VSG Check up on the city called victoria on Vancouver Island just a short ferry ride from Vancouver. By sept it should be off season and you might be able to get a deal on a 4 star hotel. The island is also the home of Buchart gardens. Vancouver also has a nice international district (not sure about after dark) parks etc. R.I.P.
motoboy 0 #5 August 20, 2005 While you are up there say hi to my mum for me. White Rock is a nice little place to visit, south of Vancouver. Or if you have the time go to Whistler. That place is always beautiful._________________________________________ There's no "I" in team. Yeah, but there's an "I" in Intercourse
skiskyrock 0 #6 August 20, 2005 I was just up there. Other people hit the main points (Victoria, Butchart Gardens, Granville Island). If you take the ferry to Victoria as a passenger it is cheap and scenic. If you take a car along, it's just scenic. I'd also recommend seeing Gastown and the Sun Yat Sen Chinese garden. Just outside the city is Indian Arm, a fjord that runs back into the mountains. You can rent sea kayaks there, and it is a beautiful paddle. There are all sorts of tiny islands you can haul out ... bring a lunch. There is also a huge adult toy shop called something like Womyns Work... didn't get to see that one, but the guidebook mentions it. Remember to keep all of your receipts... Canada will refund the taxes on some purchases.
jose 0 #7 August 20, 2005 Hey Sky, So, ya wanna come visit the home of the Canucks, eh? My group of friends/jumpers, mostly from Pacific Skydivers in Pitt Meadows, can offer you a guided tour of the best parts of Vancouver. Not only do many of us actually live in the city, but have many connections on where to go, what to do, and the best eating establishments to visit. Wanna BASE? Hell, I can even hook you up with that.....right downtown! By the way, you picked a great time of year to visit the Pac. NW. The weather and climate is amazing here during Sept....... usually. Let me know what your plans are and I will make some arrangements for a large group crawl of downtown Van, and some jumpin in Pitt. Heck, if you visit during the 17th/18th, you can take part in our 4 way scrambles that we have going on. Pig roast and all. Its a good time. Let me know. B. Remster 30 #9 August 20, 2005 Quoteand come to CALGARY Where the "I'm gonna be sick" icon..... Sorry, but Calgary is not a fun, pretty city IMO. Its only redeeming value is its proximity to the mountains I really love Vancouver Rosa. Its a fun city. Depending what you want to do, there is lots. Is work paying for the hotel? Look into the Opus... Remster

VanillaSkyGirl 6 #11 August 22, 2005 I need to go to Vancouver or very close to Vancouver because I am meeting my guy there. Remi ~ This is personal travel for me, so I will probably not be staying anywhere too pricey. I will be looking into hot springs, bed and breakfasts, etc. Jose ~ I stopped jumping back in March or February...something like that. As a matter of fact, I stopped jumping regularly back at the end of May 2004. I would have a heck of a lot more jumps by now, otherwise. I had close to 200 jumps in my first year and few months of skydiving. I am currently taking a loooong jump break for personal reasons, so I will not be going to any DZs to jump. Btw, thank you for the friendly invites to the DZ 4-way scrambles. That would have been a lot of fun! (Roasted pig? Yum!) I am most likely going to Vancouver the 2nd week in Sept. It will be only weekdays, not for the weekend. I might be able to meet up with others. I am going to know more (and make a final decision about whether or not to go) by next week. If you have a nice clear day and evening while you're there take the cable car to the top of Grouse Mountain for a spectacular view of Vancouver, Vancouver Island and Washington State. There is a restaurant up there and I forget what else but I think it is something you would really enjoy. Being up there for the sunset is very cool. I don't know if they still have it but the nine o'clock gun in Stanley park was one of my favourites...they shoot off a cannon at nine pm, large crowds gather. to enjoy the blast and concussion. Bike the sea wall around Stanley Park...lots of bikes for rent close to the park. The UBC Museum of Anthropology has an absolutely stunning collection of West Coast Indian totem poles and art. It completely blew me away. Granville Island...already mentioned...is a great place to people watch and eat. Chinatown....Vancouver has a large Asian population and has lots of terrific Asian restaurants. If you have the time, a sea kayaking daytrip in the Gulf Islands would be very nice. Gulf Island Sea Kayaking on Galiano Island is who introduced me to this wonderful sport. The owner's name is Ben Miltner, a great guy who is a very knowledgeable naturalist and who has been doing this for many, many years. If you call ahead and time things right I'm sure you'd be able to do a day trip...ferry to Galiano, paddle, ferry back to Vancouver. I'm a sushi junkie and I can honestly say this is some of the best sushi I ever had: Tojo's - Stanley Park - run, bike, hike, hang out at the beach... - Rent a car and drive north to Wheeler -- great drive, and if you're there get an aerial tour for $60. - cappuccino & gelato on commercial street (Italian section) - eat dragonfruit in Chinatown (it's banned in US) - go salmon fishing - I took pix of my trip there last year.
