ScottishJohn 25 #1 August 19, 2005 http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_1505763.html?menu=news.quirkies Pilot didn't know he'd lost half a wing A pilot flew his plane for two hours without realising he was missing half a wing. His passengers - two flight engineers on their way to repair a Boeing 767 - also failed to spot it had been ripped off, taking a fuel tank with it. Their Cessna 210's wing was split in two when it hit a tree on take-off from an airstrip near Shannon in Ireland, reports the Mirror. The pilot later said he heard a bang but thought he had just hit a small bird. He only realised what had happened when he spotted his back-up fuel tank gauge was on empty as he flew over the Channel on the way to Portugal. He put out a Mayday call and landed at Jersey airport. A spokesman there said last night: "We were amazed it managed to fly as long as it had. It was in a real state. "The pilot was the most shocked as he had not realised the extent of the damage while he was flying."---------------------------------------------------------------------- If you think my attitude stinks you should smell my fingers

jtval 0 #3 August 19, 2005 you always look at the bad side fo things. hell if something were to happen to the plane while I was in it, I would LOVE to be with a pilot who was able to fly it like nothing happenedMy photos My Videos
billvon 2,991 #4 August 19, 2005 Nothing new there. DC-3's have lost nine feet of wing, and the pilot didn't know what had happened until he landed. Rumor has it that a DC-3 lost a wing all the way back to the engine on one side, and the pilot managed to get it down in one piece. Recently an F-15 Eagle lost an entire wing and landed safely. He didn't know what had happened until after he landed.

You'd think these pilots would figure out that something's seriously wrong and be trying to look around their planes as much as possible! Sheesh... Bolas 5 #6 August 19, 2005 You'd think with all the buttons, levers, gauges, knobs, and lights they'd have one for "Wing missing" Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

From his story, he was a little too busy to look around.
