1st static line WOW!

Recommended Posts

First I would like to say HEY to all! Well I did my first static line yesterday hazy and clouds everywhere finally got an ok spot exited and had some minor hang-ups end cell closures after holding the toggles and pumping them a few times most resolved but still had one on my right side I was under a very large canopy as all of you can imagine for a newbie just didn't feel like I was doing so good with my control then the DZ is surrounded by trees and I had to land in the fire break between the trees. My instructor comments on the skydive in my log book were quote "slow exit, stable, poor canopy control, good landing." any suggestions from all of you out there new and old to this sport. Welcome to the sport, and the best advice I can give you is ask your instructor for detailed feedback on each of the things that he/she wrote in your log book. That'll be the best way for you to learn and do better on your next jump.

Congrats on that first one!

For a first ever jump that sounds pretty good to me :)

When I was doing static line there was an old pro on the DZ who always had one answer for any questions: "Just ARCH!!" :D ... and listen to your instructors, of course

Have fun!

glad ya had fun, as for the coments, no biggie, just ask what you can do better next time... and when ya get to the 5 second delay (clear and pull) have fun, i know that was te tripiest jump for me, not having the static line anymore.......well, and the firstime i saw someone else in freefall with me...

Congrates on your first jump.
I learned with the Static Line Instruction method as well. If you are really interested, keep jumping, do your practice rip cord pulls, and in a few jumps you will be pulling your own!!! Good Luck and don't get frustrated!!

Welcome, Brian. 1st off, never mind what is written for canopy control for your first couple of jumps. You are under radio control, and to knock you for doing what you are told is just stupid. In my log book, jump number 3, a note is written "don't land in the corn next time." That pissed me off, so the note in jump 4 reads "also clear off radio. flew self, flared self, great job."

2nd, are you related to Johnny Gates? :D:D:D If not, you two could compete for longest run-on sentences! :o:D

don't worry all that much about what was written down for your first S/L. Most people on their first jump don't do it perfectly for one reason... because its the first time they've ever done it!!!;)
just practice, practice, practice your arch on the ground and listen to your JMs

Um, maybe it's just me but, YEA! That's nutz. Why not? Flags? Smoke signals? A really loud bullhorn? ;)

Static line rocked- nothing like climbing out on a strut and looking ALLLLLL the way down to jack up the pucker factor.

Your first clear and pull off the rope will be an amazing feeling. I had mine on video off a wing cam and when I started critiquing myself the instuctor said 'Hey, Dave, you did great- you pulled! You didn't give us a heart attack like some people out here.'

Enjoy it- it only gets better from here.

SL is cool isn't it? I started out doing AFF and was just TOO overwhelmed with freefall. Switched to static line a week later and did a perfect arch. I landed rough (flared too early) but had a great ride.

I can't suggest anything since I'm a student myself. But in my personal opinion SL is a lot less hectic! Have fun and welcome to our crazy sport!
